The last big U.S. airline holdout to the Wi-Fi revolution, United Continental Holdings Inc., unveiled plans to wire 200 domestic aircraft for satellite-based broadband service starting next year.

United Continental said Tuesday it had signed a letter of intent with LiveTV, a subsidiary of JetBlue Airways, to provide inflight Internet service on more than 200 Continental Boeing 737 and 757 jets already equipped for DirecTV service. Get the full story »

First United 747 debuts in new paint scheme

United Airlines released the first pictures Thursday of its largest jet, the Boeing 747-400, repainted with the new logo and color scheme adopted by the Chicago-based carrier as part of its 2010 merger with Continental Airlines.

With the makeover of the 374-seat jumbo jet, United has now painted one of each of its mainline aircraft types in its new livery, which combines the United brand in a new sans serif font across the fuselage with Continental’s familiar globe on the tail.

The world’s largest airline said it has repainted 309 mainline and regional aircraft, more than 20 percent of its total fleet, since the Oct. 1 tie-up of the two carriers. Get the full story »

Continental, attendants reach tentative labor deal

Continental Airlines, now part of United Continental Holdings Inc., and a union representing thousands of flight attendants reached a tentative labor agreement Tuesday.

The two previously had reached an agreement in late September, a day before United Air Lines’s parent UAL Corp. merged with Continental to vault them over Delta Air Lines Inc. as the world’s biggest airline. Get the full story »

Continental fleet service workers ratify contract

Continental Airlines fleet service employees have ratified a contract reached with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

The airline, a unit of United Continental Holdings Inc., called the vote a “positive step forward” in a statement released Wednesday.

Continental Airlines in deal with Teamsters

Continental Airlines said Monday that it reached a labor contract with negotiators for about 7,000 union employees.

The fleet-service employees, represented by the Teamsters union, will hold a ratification vote in the coming weeks.

Continental moving to United’s O’Hare terminal next week

Just in time for the busy Thanksgiving travel season, Continental Airlines is moving its ticketing and check-in counters to the neighboring terminal operated by corporate sibling United Airlines at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

Effective Tuesday, Nov. 16, Continental passengers will check in at Continental-branded counters in O’Hare’s Terminal 1, rather than Terminal 2, where the Houston-based carrier had been located.

The move is one of the first changes visible to travelers as the two carriers begin to combine operations following the Oct. 1 close of their merger, which created the world’s largest airline. Both carriers are wholly owned subsidiaries of United Continental Holdings Inc., their Chicago-based corporate parent. Get the full story »

Continental flight attendants reject labor deal

United seeks to launch new Shanghai service

Like rival American Airlines, United Airlines wants to expand its reach into China and has asked federal officials for permission to begin daily flights from Los Angeles to Shanghai starting in May 2011.

The new service would expand United’s reach in Asia’s booming air travel market, which has rebounded from the recent global recession faster than the U.S. and Europe.

Chicago-based United also seeks to take advantage of additional flights between the U.S. and China that will become available in 2011 under a recent trade agreement that loosened the tightly regulated market for air travel between the two countries. Get the full story »

United-Continental CEO Smisek to get $975K salary

Airline company United Continental Holdings Inc., formed Friday in the merger of UAL and Continental Airlines, said Chief Executive Jeff Smisek would receive an annual salary of $975,000.

Smisek, who had been CEO of Continental, may also receive 150 percent of his salary as an annual bonus. Pay details were disclosed by the company in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Friday.

United, Continental defeat effort to block merger‎

United shareholders approve Continental merger

Chicago-based United Airlines shareholders on Friday overwhelmingly voted to approve a deal to combine with Continental to form the world’s biggest airline.

Meanwhile in Houston, Continental shareholders also gave the merger a thumbs up.

Shareholders of United parent UAL Corp. met in Elk Grove Township on Friday morning to vote on the $3 billion stock swap. The companies expect the deal to close in the next two weeks. Get the full story »

American Airlines’ traffic up 3.1% in August

AMR Corp.  said American Airlines’ August traffic rose 3.1 percent, a bigger increase than the preceding month, on continued international strength.

Most U.S. airlines have been reporting notable increases in traffic as travelers return to flying. Airlines had been cutting capacity in recent years, first in response to record-high fuel prices and then to cope with a plunge in demand during the recession. Get the full story »
