Abbott, others using iPad in medical sales

Medical-sector companies are passing out thousands of iPad tablet computers to salespeople to spruce up their pitch to doctors, and at the same time giving Apple Inc. a crucial foot in the door to business customers.

Rumors fly: iPad 2 to be shipped in 100 days?

From the Huffington Post | Multiple reports and rumors are trickling out of Apple’s manufacturing base in China about its planned next-generation iPad, informally known as the “iPad 2.” On Tuesday, DigiTimes released a report stating that Chinese manufacturing plants located in Shenzen and owned by Foxconn Electronics will build between 400,000 and 600,000 iPad 2 units, to be shipped out “within the next 100 days.”

Motorola Mobility to make tablets in 2 sizes

Motorola Mobility is planning to make tablet devices in two different sizes, Chief Executive Sanjay Jha said Wednesday.

Jha has previously voiced interest in the tablet space, but offered a few more details during an investment bank conference. Motorola Mobility will make both a 7-inch and a 10-inch tablet because “we view both formats as being quite meaningful,” Jha said. Get the full story »

Verizon to sell iPads, offer data plans

Verizon Wireless will join rival carrier AT&T in selling Apple Inc’s iPad  later this month, showing it may move closer to disrupting the tight relationship between the device maker and AT&T.

All three models of the popular tablet computer, which comes with Wi-Fi access, will be available at Verizon Wireless stores as well as AT&T stores from October 28, the companies said. Prices will range from $629 for the 16-gigabyte (GB) model to $829 for the 64 GB model at both of their stores. Get the full story »

Wal-Mart to start selling iPads

Wal-Mart Stores will start selling Apple’s iPad tablet computer this Friday.

Wal-Mart said the iPad will be available in hundreds of its stores in the United States to start, expanding to more than 2,300 outlets by mid-November.

Toshiba to bring tablet to U.S. early next year

Goldman Sachs downgrades Microsoft

Goldman Sachs downgraded Microsoft Corp. on Monday to neutral from buy, and lowered its price target on the software giant to $28 from $32.

Among the reasons for the move, the broker cited “increased caution near-term on a more elongated PC refresh cycle” as well as the threat that some of the notebook market could be cannibalized by tablet PCs, where Microsoft Windows doesn’t yet have a presence. Get the full story »

RIM unveils PlayBook tablet to compete with iPad

Research In Motion unveiled a tablet computer on Monday that it hopes will leapfrog Apple’s iPad with its potential for social networking, media publishing and corporate uses.

The tablet, named BlackBerry PlayBook, has a seven-inch (18 cm) screen and dual facing cameras. It has WiFi and Bluetooth but needs to link with a BlackBerry smartphone to access the cellular network.

Shares of RIM jumped nearly 2 percent to $49.29 in after-hours trade following the announcement, made at the company’s annual developers’ conference in San Francisco. Get the full story »
