CFO leaves NFL to return to Goldman Sachs

The National Football League’s chief financial officer is leaving  after two years to return to Goldman Sachs Group Inc., the league announced on Monday.

Anthony Noto, 42, will leave the NFL Oct. 4 and rejoin Goldman Sachs as co-head of the global media group within its investment banking division, working with Andy Gordon in New York. Get the full story »

Pepsi returning to Super Bowl

Pepsi is back in the game. The soft drink brand will advertise in next year’s Super Bowl after sitting out last year for the first time in more than two decades. Pepsi said Wednesday it will air three ads created by fans for its Pepsi MAX brand. The company has been marketing its no-calorie version of namesake Pepsi to counteract Coca-Cola’s fast-growing Coke Zero.

Schutt Sports files for Chapter 11

Litchfield-based Schutt Sports Inc., a maker of football helmets, face guards and other protective sports gear, said today that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

“This process will allow us to continue operating our business as usual and to continue servicing our customers without disruption,” Schutt Chief Executive Robert Erb said. ” We have the support of our bank, a great brand and look forward to strengthening our balance sheet and serving our customers for years to come.” Get the full story »

Allstate to sponsor Wrigley college football game

The Chicago Cubs and Northwestern University said Allstate Corp., the Northbrook-based home and auto insurer, will be the official sponsor for the Nov. 20, 2010 college football game between the Northwestern Wildcats and the Illinois Fighting Illini at Wrigley Field.

Allstate’s sports marketing activities already include college football. It renewed its sponsorship of the Sugar Bowl earlier this summer for another four years. That affiliation began in 2006. Get the full story »

Govt. wants bond revoked for fraud mastermind

The government is asking a federal court judge to revoke the bond of accused investor David Hernandez, saying he attempted to delay his sentencing by fabricating a letter from a doctor that said he was starting treatment for cancer.

Hernandez pleaded guilty in January to a Ponzi-style scheme that bilked more than 200 people of their savings. The swindle allegedly garnered $6.3 million for Hernandez, which he used to bankroll a now-defunct Chicago sports-talk radio station and other personal purchases.

Federal prosecutors say Hernandez who lives in Downers Grove and is free on bond until a sentencing that could mean up to 14 years in prison — should be locked up because he is a flight risk. Get the full story »

ESPN, AOL suspend Jay Mariotti after arrest

Former Chicago Sun-Times star sports columnist Jay Mariotti, has not spoken publicly about his weekend arrest in Los Angeles on suspicion of felony domestic assault. And it doesn’t appear he will be saying much of anything on his usual turf, ESPN or AOL’s Fanhouse site, at least for a while.

Mariotti will be sidelined next week from his regular role as panelist on ESPN’s “Around the Horn,” perhaps longer, it was learned Thursday. AOL Fanhouse, for which Mariotti has been a columnist since January 2009, has suspended him pending its own investigation.

Discover Financial sponsoring Orange Bowl

Discover Financial Services, a distant fourth in the credit-card industry, is raising its profile as the new title sponsor of one of college football’s most prestigious bowl games – the Orange Bowl, of course.

The Riverwoods-based company, which has orange in its corporate logo, replaces longtime sponsor FedEx, which ended its 21-year run.

Mike North joins Fox Sports Radio

Mike North, whose “Monsters & Money in the Morning” went south in short order, is joining Fox Sports Radio. The syndicate’s announcement came Tuesday, less than a week after CBS-owned WBBM-Ch. 2 said it would drop North’s little-watched “Monsters & Money” early morning program after just seven months. Little Caesars owner to bid for Pistons

The owner of the Little Caesars Pizza chain and professional baseball and ice hockey teams said Monday he wants to buy the Detroit Pistons basketball team, confirming speculation since the team’s owner died last year.

Michael Ilitch, who lives in the Detroit area and owns the Detroit Tigers baseball team and Detroit Red Wings hockey team, said he wants to keep the National Basketball Association team from leaving Detroit. Get the full story »

Nolan Ryan puts something extra on Rangers pitch

A group led by former all-star pitcher Nolan Ryan and a minor league baseball team owner made a new bid to buy the bankrupt Texas Rangers in a move that would block an auction for the Major League Baseball team set for next week.

The Rangers’ bankruptcy court-appointed chief restructuring officer, William Snyder, said at a  hearing on Friday that he supports the new offer, according to a person who attended the hearing by telephone. Get the full story »
