With more devices, 4G to hit its stride in ‘11

Until recently, consumers wanting to take advantage of 4G wireless network speeds didn’t have much choice in devices. Carriers offered laptop cards and USB dongles, but the selection of smart phones and other gadgets was minimal.

This dynamic will change dramatically this year, thanks to a flurry of product launches from mobile operators that are eager to meet increasing consumer demand for fast wireless broadband and draw more revenue from data traffic. Facebook tops Google as most visited site in U.S.

Facebook surpassed Google for the first time as the most visited website in the United States for most of 2010.

The social network site edged out Google.com with 8.9 percent of all U.S. visits between January and November 2010, while Google.com ranked second with about 7.2 percent of all visits, according to online measurement service Experian Hitwise. Get the full story »

Groupon says it raised $500M in financing

Chicago-based Groupon Inc. has raised $500 million in equity financing of the $950 million it hopes to get.

The money came from 33 investors, Groupon said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The company it is not disclosing their names, but DealBook reported Wednesday the start-up is negotiating financing commitments with Fidelity Investments, T. Rowe Price and Morgan Stanley. What’s Groupon worth? Fundraising spurs debate

The venture capital data provider VC Experts estimates that the new round of fundraising values Groupon at $6.4 billion, while TechCrunch, citing an unnamed source, pegs it at a more modest $4.75 billion.

VC Experts: Groupon files to raise up to $950M

Groupon’s board has authorized the company to raise up to $950 million in what would be the biggest round of equity financing since Pixar sought some $500 million in 1995, the venture capital data firm VC Experts said on Tuesday.

The online discount coupon company, which specializes in local advertising, is seeking the funding after reports last month that it was in talks to sell itself to Google for up to $6 billion, in what would have been the web advertising giant’s biggest ever acquisition. Get the full story »

Logitech denies delay in Google TV set-top boxes

Logitech International SA  Monday denied Google Inc.  had asked the Swiss electronics firm to suspend production of television set-top boxes until the U.S. Internet giant irons out software problems.

“Suggestions that production of the Logitech Revue companion box might need to be halted to address software issues are unfounded. As those familiar with the product know, it is not necessary for Logitech to make changes to the companion box to accommodate future enhancements to Google TV,” Logitech spokeswoman Nancy Morrison said in a statement to Dow Jones Newswires. Verizon to sell Motorola 4G phone

Verizon Wireless will distribute a smartphone made by Motorola Inc. to run on its new 4G network, the carrier’s chief operating officer, John Stratton, said in an interview Tuesday. Google to add hacking warnings to search results

Google has been posting malware warnings on suspicious search results for years, but now it’ll also add notifications to sites that might have been hacked.

When a site raises red flags, Google will add a link under the main search result that says, “This site may be compromised,” the company said in a blog post. Google will use  automated tools designed to search for common signs of hacking.

Poll: People can’t live without high-speed Internet

High-speed Internet has had the greatest technological impact on society over the past decade and is the technology most people say they cannot live without, according to a new poll.

Twenty four percent of 1,950 U.S. adults questioned in the online survey conducted by Zogby International said high-speed Internet had the greatest impact on their lives, followed closely by Facebook at 22 percent and Google with 10 percent.

Of the technologies people say they cannot live without, high-speed Internet came in first at 28 percent and email was second at 18 percent. Get the full story »

Google eyes smaller players after Groupon

Google is in talks with smaller players in the online discount coupon market after Groupon turned down the web giant’s $6 billion buyout offer, the New York Post said, citing a source close to the situation.

Groupon’s smaller rivals LivingSocial and BuyWithMe may now be on Google’s radar after Groupon deal fell through, the Post said.

BuyWithMe interim President David Wolfe, who declined to comment on whether he was speaking to Google, told the Post that he believes Google needs to enter the coupon advertising market. Get the full story »
