General Motors is expanding a recall of some 2011 trucks and SUVs to fix a problem that could cause the vehicles’ rear axles to lock.
The recall, originally announced in December, now covers 26,751 Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC trucks and SUVs. The models affected are: Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Colorado, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe; and GMC Canyon, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL. A manufacturer of fully electric vehicles has increased production sooner than expected and will add 70 more jobs this year, welcome news in a region battered by layoffs at recreational vehicle plants.
Think North America, with 27 workers currently, will add the new jobs in hopes of producing 2,500 cars this year at its Elkhart operations in a former RV plant, WNDU-TV reported Thursday. The company began production in October. Get the full story »

General Motors Co. wants pay for union-represented workers be tied to employees’ work performance and the company’s financial health — much like the way its salaried workers are paid — in what would be a major shift in how generations of auto workers have been compensated.

A big cut in product development spending while General Motors was in bankruptcy protection set the company’s product development plans back by about a year, its top executive told reporters Tuesday.
Chairman and CEO Daniel Akerson said the company is working to accelerate vehicle plans that were postponed when research and development spending was cut to $5 billion per year as the company was trying to save money during its 2009 stay in bankruptcy protection. The spending has since been restored to $7 billion.

Maserati will get its own SUV model next year, built on the platform of Jeep Grand Cherokee at the Chrysler Group plant in Detroit, the companies announced Tuesday.
