General Motors Co. is looking to apply the technology of its Chevrolet Volt to a wide array of vehicles, potentially including a Cadillac SRX plug-in, Chief Executive Daniel Akerson said Tuesday.

The automaker is developing a hatchback and a crossover that could use the Volt technology, Akerson said during a speech at the Automotive News World Congress.

“We’re pleased and a bit surprised with the introductory orders for the Volt,” Akerson told reporters after the speech. He said sales of the Volt would likely top 25,000 in 2011.

Akerson said eventually he would like to have an electric vehicle for each of GM’s brands, a goal that includes hybrids.

When asked whether a Cadillac SRX plug-in was in the works, he said its arrival was “likely.”
