Tarmac delay rules to extend to foreign airlines

Federal officials are poised to broaden new tarmac delay rules to include overseas carriers, closing a loophole that was exposed during the Boxing Day blizzard that shuttered New York City’s airports.

The U.S. Department of Transportation said Thursday it expects to issue the latest passenger protections in April and will likely build on a controversial 2010 rule that set fines of $27,500 for every passenger on board planes operated by domestic carriers that idle at an airport for more than 180 minutes. Midway ranks worst in on-time performance

Crain’s Chicago Business | Less than half the December  departures from Midway Airport took off on time, according to the Department of Transportation, making its on-time performance the worst in the nation. It did better in arrivals, and United led the major airlines in on-time performance.

Continental to cut 500 jobs in moving HQ

United Continental Holdings Inc.’s Continental Airlines will cut about 500 jobs at the carrier’s Houston offices between April 1 and June 30, the Houston Chronicle reported Monday, citing a letter from Continental to the Texas Workforce Commission.

Around the time of its Oct. 1 merger with United Airlines to form the biggest U.S. carrier, Continental said it would continue to employ its Houston-based management and administrative workers through March. Get the full story »

Delta to add roomier coach seats on int’l flights

Delta Air Lines will offer a premium economy section on international flights this summer, with more legroom and room to recline — at an additional cost of $80 to $160 each way.

Weather flight tally: 20,000 canceled

Winter storms forced airlines to ground nearly 20,000 flights this week and chilled industry earnings, resulting in an estimated net loss of $121 million to $150 million, according to AirlineForecasts LLC on Friday.

Delta plans higher fares to counter fuel costs

A senior Delta Air Lines Inc.  executive said Thursday that more fare increases are needed to counter escalating fuel costs as the airline pares plans to boost capacity this quarter.

United-Continental maps next steps in integration

Passengers of United Continental Holdings Inc. should expect a more seamless flying experience by late spring on the recently merged United and Continental Airlines.

Merger costs mask 4Q gains at United Continental

United Continental Holdings Inc. Wednesday posted a wider quarterly net loss on expenses tied to last year’s merger of UAL Corp. and Continental Airlines, but excluding items the company made a profit.
