Sears among companies helping military families

The White House is partnering with Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Sears Holdings Corp. and Siemens AG to help struggling military families find jobs as part of an initiative partially overseen by Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal.

Each company will offer different services for military spouses and veterans as part of an initiative–called Joining Forces–formally launched Tuesday by President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden. Get the full story »

Motorola’s Greg Brown named to White House advisory panel

Motorola Solutions Inc. Chief Executive Greg Brown has been named to President Barack Obama’s Management Advisory Board, a group of former and current CEOs tasked with advising administration officials on how to bring private-sector practices to the government.

The White House made its announcement on Thursday and the group is scheduled to meet for the first time on Friday. Brown joins nine other corporate chiefs, including Jeffrey Kindler, the former CEO of Pfizer Inc., BET Networks CEO Debra Lee and American Red Cross CEO Gail McGovern. Get the full story »

Obama prepared to veto spending bill if necessary

The White House said on Wednesday it strongly opposed a Republican-backed spending bill and said President Barack Obama will veto a bill if it undermines his priorities or national security or curtails drivers of long-term economic growth.

Motorola, Boeing in White House huddle with Hu

White House: Jobless aid lapse may cost 600K jobs

The White House urged Congress Thursday to extend unemployment aid and warned that failure to act would inflict a heavy toll on millions of Americans that could put the U.S. economic recovery at risk.

“Without an extension, employment would be about 600,000 lower…in December 2011 than if a year-long extension were passed,” according to a new report from the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

U.S. unemployment insurance for those on long-term aid, which Congress had already extended to up to 99 weeks from a traditional 26 weeks of support, expired on Wednesday. Get the full story »

White House presses China on yuan

U. of C. law professor stops blogging after outcry

A law professor at the University of Chicago, where President Barack Obama once taught, is sorry he ever complained about the president’s tax policies.

Todd Henderson last week wrote on a blog about the effect the expiring Bush tax cuts would have on his family. He said his family, whose household income is north of $250,000, could not afford higher taxes. His wife is a doctor at the University of Chicago Hospitals.

“A quick look at our family budget, which I will happily share with the White House, will show him that like many Americans, we are just getting by despite seeming to be rich. We aren’t,” Henderson wrote on the blog “Truth on the Market.” Get the full story »

Obama chooses Warren to launch consumer bureau

Harvard law professor Elizabeth Warren, appointed Friday to launch the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, likely won’t be the agency’s first official director, but she will have a major say in who gets the powerful job.

Warren also will have a broader portfolio of duties, advising President Obama on “policies and programs that are designed to protect the financial interests of middle-class families,” the White House said.
