Martha Stewart to lead Hallmark Ch. makeover

Martha Stewart has a knack for transforming dated rooms into design showpieces. Now she’s undertaking another major renovation: the Hallmark Channel.

Beginning Monday, Stewart will provide eight hours of programming each weekday as part of an ambitious revamp of the Hallmark Channel. After pinning its fortunes on the broad appeal of sentimental made-for-TV movies and reruns of such classic shows as “The Golden Girls” and “Little House on the Prairie,” Hallmark plans to focus on home and lifestyle improvement and cooking shows.

Judge names mediator in Tribune Co. bankruptcy

The judge in Tribune Co.’s stalemated bankruptcy case appointed a mediator Wednesday to try to forge a settlement of legal claims stemming from media company’s disastrous 2007 leveraged buyout.

Tribune Co. committee to oversee reorganization

The board of directors of bankrupt Tribune Co. formed a special committee to oversee the media company’s contentious reorganization process and to manage any legal claims arising from its 2007 leveraged buyout.

Tribune Co. to launch digital channel Antenna TV

Tribune Co., following the lead of WCIU-Ch. 26 parent Weigel Broadcasting, is launching a service supplying digital subchannel programming for local TV stations. Antenna TV, beginning Jan. 3, will deliver a round-the-clock slate of vintage TV series reruns and movies from Sony and DLT Entertainment to a secondary digital channel of WGN-Ch. 9 and those of other Tribune Co. stations.

Tribune Co. delays filing amendments to bankruptcy plan

Tribune Co. delayed filing anticipated amendments to its bankruptcy restructuring plan Friday, citing ongoing negotiations with creditors.

A week ago, in the wake of collapsed talks toward a new settlement in the case, Tribune Co. lawyers told a Delaware bankruptcy judge that the company would file plan amendments by Friday and provide suggestions for new schedule for voting and confirmation hearings on the revised plan. Blockbuster preparing to file bankruptcy

After dominating the home video rental business for more than a decade and struggling to survive in recent years against upstarts Netflix and Redbox, Blockbuster Inc. is preparing to file for bankruptcy next month, according to people who have been briefed on the matter.

Executives from Blockbuster and its senior debt holders last week held meetings with the six major movie studios to discuss their intention to enter a “pre-planned” bankruptcy in mid-September, said several people familiar with the situation who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of ongoing talks. ESPN, AOL suspend Jay Mariotti after arrest

Former Chicago Sun-Times star sports columnist Jay Mariotti, has not spoken publicly about his weekend arrest in Los Angeles on suspicion of felony domestic assault. And it doesn’t appear he will be saying much of anything on his usual turf, ESPN or AOL’s Fanhouse site, at least for a while.

Mariotti will be sidelined next week from his regular role as panelist on ESPN’s “Around the Horn,” perhaps longer, it was learned Thursday. AOL Fanhouse, for which Mariotti has been a columnist since January 2009, has suspended him pending its own investigation.

Netflix releases long-awaited iPhone app

Netflix unveiled its long-awaited app for the iPhone on Thursday, sending the company’s shares almost 2 percent higher.

Will Eisner be Tribune Co.’s next chairman?

Former Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Michael Eisner is in discussions that could lead to his return to the media spotlight — as chairman of the now-bankrupt Tribune Co.

The Chicago-based media company’s largest creditors are having preliminary conversations with prospective candidates who could operate Tribune Co. once it emerges from bankruptcy, according to several people with knowledge of the situation.

Eisner, who has been dabbling in the digital world as an investor since stepping down from Disney in 2005, is among the candidates under consideration to replace Chicago real estate magnate Sam Zell as chairman of the reorganized company. Get the full story »

Apple in talks with media giants to rent TV shows

Apple is in talks with several media conglomerates to allow consumers to rent TV shows through iTunes according to a report in Bloomberg Tuesday, which cited three unnamed sources familiar with the situation.

Apple is in serious discussions with News Corp. to allow viewers to rent programming from its Fox network for 48 hours, the report said, adding that Walt Disney and CBS are in talks with Apple as well.

Toshiba developing 3-D TVs that won’t require glasses

Japanese electronics maker Toshiba Corp. said Tuesday it is developing technology for a 3-D television that won’t require viewers to wear special glasses. Toshiba’s new TVs will be a world first in offering glasses-free 3-D, according to the nationally circulated Yomiuri. Get the full story »

Susan Carlson to co-anchor WBBM-Ch. 2 news

WBBM-Ch. 2 said Wednesday it plans to pair Susan Carlson as co-anchor with enigmatic New York import Steve Bartelstein on the early morning news show that replaces the moribund, little-watched “Monsters & Money in the Morning,” its seven-month talk and news-ish experiment that ends later this month.
