Eight Illinois companies were among the 100 companies nationwide deemed best by Working Mother magazine, whose 2010 list opens a window onto a widening array of corporate assistance programs.

Tuition assistance, a concierge service to help with errands, leadership training for women, assistance for employees with special-needs children, paid maternity and paternity leave, and extensive flexible work arrangements were among the benefits at the top 10 firms.

All the winners provide private lactation rooms and help in finding elder-care services.

This 25th annual listing is based on companies’ answers to 600 questions on work force, compensation, child care, flexibility programs and leave policies. Two firms — IBM and Johnson & Johnson — have been on the list since the beginning.

The top 10 companies overall were: Deloitte, Discovery Communications, Ernst & Young, General Mills, IBM, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers, University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics and Wellstar Health System.

The Illinois companies that placed in the top 100 were: Abbott Labs, Allstate, Grant Thornton, Hewitt Associates, Katten Muchin Rosenman, Kraft Foods, Northern Trust, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare.

The eight Illinois firms on the list:

Kraft Foods is on this list? I’d hate to see the “average” or “worst” companies for working moms.

Abbott labs was not flexible at all after I had my second child. How do they keep getting nominated to Working Mother’s top 10? I had an awful time with that company.

Coinstar was terrible – which is of course why they’re not on the list!
