Northwestern hospital, doctors eye restructuring

Northwestern Memorial Hospital and affiliated doctor groups are discussing a major restructuring to help its doctors and facilities better prepare for the health overhaul law and put the academic medical center in the nation’s top tier, according to sources and a document obtained by the Tribune.

Called “Northwestern Medicine,” the new structure being pursued is being designed to be more nimble when it comes to contracting with health insurance companies who pay the hospital and doctors as well as making business decisions when it comes to recruiting physicians or obtaining grant money, these sources said. Northwestern Memorial’s Prentice obstetrics chair to resign

Dr. Sherman Elias, the top obstetrician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Prentice Women’s Hospital, is resigning.

Elias, Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, will resign at the end of the year after seven years, the medical school confirmed to the Tribune.

Elias’ departure is viewed as a surprise, according to sources inside the hospital and medical school. He could not be reached Friday evening for comment. Get the full story »

More than 1,100 in Illinois warned of layoffs in Aug.

National Manufacturing Co., PNC Bank, Precision Dormer LLC and Northwestern Memorial Hospital are among about a dozen companies that notified the state of Illinois in August that they plan to close plants or institute “mass layoffs,” putting a total of more than 1,100 employees out of work. NU med center completes deal for VA site

Northwestern Memorial Hospital has completed the purchase of the former Lakeside Veterans Affairs hospital site at 333 E. Huron St. Northwestern had previously bought most of the Streeterville property, picking up the remaining 30 percent last month.  Neither terms nor planned uses for the parcel were disclosed.
