McDonald’s Corp. has cancelled an in-store free sampling of fruit smoothies that had been scheduled for next week following worries the event’s popularity would cause the fast-food chain to run out of the product.

“The McCafe Real Fruit Smoothies are an absolute hit with our customers and we’re experiencing unprecedented demand for this delicious new choice on our menu,” the Oak Brook-based company said in a statement to the Tribune today.

“Due to the overwhelming popularity and to ensure continued supply to meet our customers’ needs, we will not be executing the national in-restaurant sampling event of McCafe Real Fruit Smoothies on July 22-24, as previously communicated.”

McDonald’s has not decided whether to re-schedule the free smoothie sampling. “Working with our franchisees and suppliers, we will be reviewing the potential of rescheduling the national in-restaurant Smoothie sampling event for a later date,” the company said.

I think this is false advertising. I have a coupon for a free smoothie or frappe that states it is good until 08/15/10. If they are afraid of running out of the fruit or whatever they should at least give you something free (such as a shake or sundae or something) or it really is false advertising. If they don’t make it right I will quit buying their products. Burger King is just down the road!

Angela, The coupon from Parade magazine this last Sunday and the free offer on the 22nd-24th are two totally different things! Use you free coupon like I did and get over yourself. You deserve Burger King if you are that cheap and not happy with a free valid coupon! I am back now to slurping my FREE smoothy from the kind folks at McDonalds!
