Unilever profit up 19% on sales growth

Unilever NV, one of the world’s largest makers of consumer products such as Dove soaps, Lipton teas and Ben & Jerry’s ice creams, Thursday reported third-quarter earnings rose 19 percent to $1.75 billion on sales growth, cost-cutting, and the weak euro, which more than offset higher raw materials costs.

Unilever said it expects to close a $1,85 billion purchase of Sara Lee’s personal care products division, which is being examined closely by European regulators, in the fourth quarter. It has also agreed to buy Alberto Culver, the U.S. maker of Noxzema, TRESemme and V05, for $3.7 billion. Get the full story »

San Francisco bans Happy Meals

San Francisco’s board of supervisors has voted, by a veto-proof margin, to ban most of McDonald’s Happy Meals as they are now served in the restaurants.

The measure will make San Francisco the first major city in the country to forbid restaurants from offering a free toy with meals that contain more than set levels of calories, sugar and fat. The ordinance also would require restaurants to provide fruits and vegetables with all meals for children that come with toys.

$5M McCormick grant for new U. of C. hospital

The Robert R. McCormick Foundation said Friday thatĀ  it will give $5 million toward the University of Chicago Medical Center’s new $700 million hospital pavilion, slated to open in 2013.

In awarding the grant, the foundation said it was given as part of the nonprofit’s commitment to “civic health.” The primary entrance to the new Hospital Pavilion will be named the McCormick Foundation Lobby in recognition of theĀ  gift, the U. of C. Medical Center said. Get the full story »
