United Continental to roll out Wi-Fi in 2012

The last big U.S. airline holdout to the Wi-Fi revolution, United Continental Holdings Inc., unveiled plans to wire 200 domestic aircraft for satellite-based broadband service starting next year.

United Continental said Tuesday it had signed a letter of intent with LiveTV, a subsidiary of JetBlue Airways, to provide inflight Internet service on more than 200 Continental Boeing 737 and 757 jets already equipped for DirecTV service. Get the full story »

Survey: Behavior not safe at Wi-Fi hotspots

U.S. consumers love Wi-Fi access but don’t always have safe habits when they visit hotspots, according to a new survey by industry group Wi-Fi Alliance.

The survey polled 1,054 Americans over the age of 18 through online interviews. The results showed that 32 percent of respondents had tried to get on a Wi-Fi network that wasn’t their own during the last 12 months, up from 18 percent in December 2008. When asked whether sharing a Wi-Fi network password or a house key required more trust, 40 percent of survey participants chose the former. Get the full story »

Free Facebook access on flights in February

From PC Magazine | This month, a cross-country flight won’t be a reason to temporarily suspend a poke war. Seven airlines will offer free access to Facebook via their Wi-Fi networks for the month of February.

The no-cost service will be available through a partnership between Gogo Inflight Internet and Ford, and will be offered on North American flights of Virgin America, AirTran, US Airways, American Airlines, Delta, United Airlines, and Alaska Airlines, Gogo said in a blog post. Get the full story>>

RIM assures that Wi-Fi only PlayBook on schedule

Research In Motion Ltd.  reiterated Thursday its plans to release the Wi-Fi-only version of its PlayBook tablet in the first quarter of calendar 2011.

“The BlackBerry PlayBook is expected to begin shipping in the U.S. in Q1,” RIM said in an e-mail sent via their outside public-relations firm, Brodeur Partners. Get the full story »

AT&T plans to expand Wi-Fi hotzones program

AT&T Inc. plans to expand its Wi-Fi hotzone in Times Square and add new coverage areas in New York and San Francisco, after a strong response to its pilot program.

The company initially plans to expand the Times Square Wi-Fi hotzone and add new ones near Rockefeller Center and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in midtown Manhattan. It also is planning a new hotzone for the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco. The program is intended to supplement mobile broadband in urban areas with consistently high usage

Deadline set for Google’s Wi-Fi network data

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal on Friday demanded that Google provide access to data the company said it accidentally collected from public Wi-Fi networks.

Greyhound offering $1 express routes from Chicago

Greyhound will launch new express bus routes in the Midwest Dec. 1 to take passengers from Chicago to Milwaukee, Madison, Indianapolis and Lafayette.

Tickets start at $1 for the one-stop service, the company said Friday, on new buses that feature reserved seating, free Wi-Fi access, additional legroom and power outlets. Dave Leach, president and CEO of Greyhound said the company is adding the routes in response to Megabus competition and higher demand from travelers looking to hop between popular Midwest cities. Barnes & Noble Nook on way to Wal-Mart shelves

Barnes & Noble Inc. will ship its Nook electronic readers to 2,500 Wal-Mart stores this month to reach more shoppers ahead of the holiday season.

The devices will hit Wal-Mart shelves as soon as Oct. 24 and will be available on the discount chain’s Web site, the world’s largest bookstore chain said in a statement Thursday. Get the full story »

FCC vote clears way for ‘Super Wi-Fi’

The Federal Communications Commission is opening up unused airwaves between television stations for wireless broadband networks that will be more powerful and can travel farther than today’s Wi-Fi hotspots.

The five-member FCC voted unanimously Thursday to allow the use of so-called “white spaces” between TV stations to deliver broadband connections that can function like Wi-Fi networks on steroids. Get the full story »

FCC: ‘Super Wi-Fi’ could be a year away

A new flavor of Wi-Fi, with longer range and wall-piercing power, could show up in wireless gadgets a year from now if the Federal Communications Commission works out the last details of new spectrum rules that have been long in the making.

Nearly two years ago, the FCC voted to open up the airwaves between broadcast TV channels — so-called “white spaces” — for wireless broadband connections that would work like Wi-Fi on steroids. Netflix releases long-awaited iPhone app

Netflix unveiled its long-awaited app for the iPhone on Thursday, sending the company’s shares almost 2 percent higher.

Starbucks to add local content to go with Wi-Fi

Starbucks Inc., hoping to leverage its recent decision to offer free Wi-Fi at its stores, is working with Yahoo Inc. to create a Web site customized by location.

In addition to The New York Times, USA Today, Yahoo and Zagat, Starbucks announced last week that publisher Rodale, Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr. Boost and online charity DonorsChoose.org  also will contribute content providers for its Starbucks Digital Network. The Web site is expected to go live this fall.

Customers who access the Internet at Starbucks will encounter the site before they can surf the web.
