Almost half of companies plan to hire in 2011

Here’s some modestly encouraging news for job seekers: About 47 percent of companies with sales in the $25 million to $2 billion range, plan to hire employees in 2011, according to a national survey of chief financial officers (CFOs) by Bank of America.

Ford, other automakers announce Michigan jobs

Michigan’s auto industry could get a boost — including the possibility of more than 2,000 additional jobs at the Detroit area’s biggest carmakers — from projects assisted with state tax incentives announced Tuesday.

Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp. and Chrysler Group LLC were among the 16 companies with projects granted tax incentives by a state board.

It’s not clear exactly how many new jobs might be created directly at the companies awarded the tax incentives. But the new jobs could top 2,000 with the Detroit-area automakers alone, if all projects — including some in the early stages — materialize as planned. Get the full story »

Job openings increase for second straight month

Job openings rose in August for the second straight month and layoffs dropped sharply, evidence that the job market is slowly healing.

Global youth unemployment reaches new high

A United Nations agency warned of a “lost generation” as more young people across the world give up the search for work. It reported that of some 620 million young people ages 15 to 24 in the work force, about 81 million were unemployed at the end of 2009 — the highest level in two decades of record-keeping by the organization, which is based in Geneva.

Job openings flat at 2.9 million in June

U.S. job openings were flat in June while the number of new hires slipped, according to a government report on Wednesday that underscored the persistent weakness in the labor market.

Job openings down, hiring up in May

U.S. job openings slipped in May, but the hiring rate climbed to its highest level in nearly two years, government data showed  Tuesday.

Job openings, a measure of labor demand, dipped to 3.21 million from 3.30 million in April, the Labor Department said in its monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. Get the full story »

Obama says economy going in right direction

President Barack Obama on Friday cast the state of the economy in upbeat terms, declaring that it was headed in the right direction even as employers slashed payrolls last month for the first time in half a year. The unemployment rate dropped to 9.5 percent. “To every American who is looking for work, I promise you we’re going to keep on doing everything that we can,” Obama said. “I will do everything in my power to help our economy create jobs and opportunities for all people.”

Job openings rise to highest level in 16 months

Associated Press | Job openings jumped in April by the most in 16 months, a sign that
hiring by private employers is healthy despite last week’s disappointing
jobs report. The Labor Department says the number of jobs advertised at
the end of April rose to 3.1 million from 2.8 million in March. That’s
the most openings since December 2008.
