Sync Technology Center to close Tuesday

The Sync Technology Center, a West Loop office aimed at becoming a hub for Chicago’s high-tech scene, is closing its current location on Tuesday after just four months in the space.

Mike Rhodes, a Chicago entrepreneur, had opened the center in November to provide office space to startups, as well as other firms specializing in services such as marketing or search engine optimization. Rhodes was also overseeing a new $5 million early-stage investment fund, and the center played host to many local tech events. Get the full story »

Google announces ‘Instant Previews’ search feature

People searching on Google will soon be able to see previews of websites before clicking on them.

The “Instant Previews” feature announced Tuesday is meant to help people bypass websites that are either irrelevant or simply too visually cluttered for their tastes. It works for Google web searches, as well as searches for news, video and local businesses. Get the full story »

Search engine firm TalentDrive hires Allstate exec

TalentDrive, the Chicago-based online resume search engine company founded by a former Leo Burnett executive, has hired former Allstate Corp. manager Jeff Tomaszewski as its chief technology officer.

TalentDrive’s chief executive is Sean Bisceglia, who in 1998 sold his technology marketing firm to Leo Burnett and later became the ad firm’s technology group CEO.

In May TalentDrive was highlighted in a U.S. News & World Report article on “How to Stand Out from the Crowd.” The company’s search engine is called TalentFilter. Get the full story »

Online travel coalition fights Google’s ITA deal

Several leading Internet travel agencies and search engines are urging U.S. government regulators to block Google from buying a technology supplier that plays an instrumental role in finding the best airline fares. The opponents, led by Expedia Inc., have formed a coalition called FairSearch.org to fight Google Inc.’s proposed $700 million acquisition of ITA Software.

Google, AOL extend Web search pact

Google Inc. and AOL Inc. have agreed to extend their search partnership for five years and expanded their pact into mobile search and online video, two areas expected to grow as the media business transitions to digital communications.

The deal helps Google protect its dominant share of the fast-growing Web search business from smaller competitors,  including Microsoft Corp.  and IAC/InteractiveCorp.  Get the full story »
