Axelrod: Shutdown talks shouldn’t be political

As negotiations continued in Washington to avert a federal government shutdown, a top political strategist for President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign said today the discussions should not involve political winners and losers.

Obama prepared to veto spending bill if necessary

The White House said on Wednesday it strongly opposed a Republican-backed spending bill and said President Barack Obama will veto a bill if it undermines his priorities or national security or curtails drivers of long-term economic growth.

GAO: Streamline the bureaucracy, save billions

The U.S. government could save tens of billions of dollars a year by streamlining a bloated federal bureaucracy, according to a report Tuesday from the Government Accountability Office.

In its first annual report on the subject, the GAO reviewed a wide range of federal programs, agencies, offices and initiatives to identify where the government is duplicating goals or activities. Get the full story »
