Southwest overhauls frequent-flier program

Southwest Airlines is preparing a $100 million reboot of its Rapid Rewards frequent-flier program that executives describe as the biggest product launch in the carrier’s 40-year history.

Effective March 1, the low-cost carrier plans to unveil a more complicated point system to replace its current program of awarding a free trip to passengers who log 16 flights over a 24-month stretch.

It is unprecedented and risky for a major airline to completely remake its loyalty program from scratch, analysts said. Get the full story »

United to offer bonus miles to mobile pass users

United Airlines said this morning that it is offering customers 1,000 bonus frequent flier miles through the end of the year when checking in for domestic flights (or those to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) on a mobile device. United offers mobile boarding passes at almost 40 airports.

30% fewer miles for short United, American flights

United Airlines and American Airlines have both begun promotions that allow frequent fliers to use 30 percent fewer miles if they want to squeeze in some “short-hop” travel in the next few months. Both deals only apply to trips of 700 miles or less. Get the full story »
