Crain’s hires Jim Kirk for top editorial post

Crain’s Chicago Business and the Chicago Reader each announced the appointment of new top editorial executives on Monday.

Jim Kirk, who has been managing editor of the non-profit Chicago News Cooperative for the last nine months, is joining Crain’s as chief of editorial operations, beginning Feb. 24. The new top editorial post will have him overseeing Crain’s growing number of content-based businesses. The Chicago Reader reported Mara Shalhoup, editor of parent Creative Loafing’s alternative weekly in Atlanta, will be its next editor, effective Mar. 7.

Walgreens CFO charged for 2nd time with DUI

Walgreen Co. Chief Financial Officer Wade Miquelon was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving last month, his second such arrest in a little more than a year, according to court records.

Miquelon, 45, of Winnetka, was stopped in a Jeep at 10:03 p.m. Sept. 25 in the 200 block of Sheridan Road in Kenilworth. Police ticketed him for having a tail light out, driving with a suspended license and driving under the influence.

Chicago investor submits $25M for hockey team

The city of Glendale, Ariz., says a prospective buyer of the Phoenix Coyotes hockey team has deposited $25 million in an escrow account “in a show of good faith.”

Glendale, in a news release Friday, said the buyer has asked for confidentiality because negotiations are ongoing, but there have been multiple reports the city has been in talks with Chicago investor Matthew Hulsizer.

The figure is equal to the amount of city funds Glendale had deposited, at the NHL’s insistence, to cover potential losses for the coming season while a local buyer was sought. Get the full story »

United-Continental CEO Smisek to get $975K salary

Airline company United Continental Holdings Inc., formed Friday in the merger of UAL and Continental Airlines, said Chief Executive Jeff Smisek would receive an annual salary of $975,000.

Smisek, who had been CEO of Continental, may also receive 150 percent of his salary as an annual bonus. Pay details were disclosed by the company in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Friday.

Citi sets raises, bonuses for top 25 execs

The top 25 executives at Citigroup Inc., except Chief Executive  Vikram Pandit, are getting multimillion dollar salary raises in stock and potentially much more in bonuses.
