Ill. average gas price above $4, last seen in July ‘08

Gas prices across Illinois and Indiana continued to climb in April from continuing unrest in the Middle East and the annual switchover to a more expensive summer blend of gasoline, according to AAA Chicago. It marked the first time the monthly average has been above $4 a gallon since July 2008.

Monthly average prices in Illinois and northern Indiana reached $4.02 and $3.90 respectively, AAA said this morning in its Fuel Gauge Report. In Illinois, regular unleaded gasoline has increased 39 cents during the past month and per-gallon prices are $1.02 higher than last year. Get the full story »

U.S. gas prices rise 9 cents, hitting April record

U.S. gasoline prices soared nearly 9 cents over the last week to $3.68 a gallon, the highest pump price on record for April, the Energy Department said on Monday.

The national price for regular unleaded gasoline is up 86 cents from a year ago, based on the department’s weekly survey of fuel prices at service stations. Cleveland and Chicago had the biggest weekly gasoline price increases, rising 19 and 18 cents a gallon, respectively. Get the full story »

Chicago-area gas prices up 11% in last month

Gas prices continued to rise Monday, driven higher for nearly two weeks straight by the turmoil in Libya, with analysts expecting prices to keep climbing.

In the Chicago area, gas prices have risen 11 percent, or 37 cents, in the last month to an average of $3.716, according to a daily survey by motorist group AAA. U.S. gas prices have increased for 13 days in a row, rising nearly 34 cents in that time, the second-biggest price jump in the history of the gasoline market, according to the Lundberg Survey. Gas prices top $4 at some Chicago stations

For the first time since the summer of 2008, gasoline prices in Chicago have climbed over the $4 mark.

Prices have climbed above $4 at some stations such as the BP station at Lawrence Avenue and Marine Drive in Uptown which is charging $4.09 for a gallon of regular this morning. More Illinois residents to travel for Thanksgiving

More than 2 million Illinois travelers will fly or drive to a destination over Thanksgiving weekend this year, a nearly 12 percent increase from the 2009 holiday, AAA Chicago said Tuesday.

The motoring organization said 2.25 million Illinois residents are expected to travel, with 2.1 million in cars and 87,000 flying. The average cost of an unleaded gallon of gasoline is $3.05 in Illinois and $2.90 in neighboring Indiana, AAA Chicago said.

The projected increase in Illinois Thanksgiving travelers is slightly more than what is forecast nationwide. AAA expects an 11.4 percent jump in the number of travelers from 2009, with 42.2 million people going at least 50 miles from their home. Of that amount, 94 percent — 39.7 million people — will be driving. Get the full story »

Gas prices expected to fall even more

Gasoline prices have been falling for weeks, and they could go even lower as autumn’s leaves begin to drop.

The national average for a gallon of unleaded regular was $2.681 on Friday, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. That’s 6.6 cents lower than a month ago and 8.5 cents higher than a year ago.

Gasoline prices fall ahead of Labor Day weekend

There is good news at the gas pump, as Americans get ready to fill their cars, RVs and boats for the Labor Day weekend.

The national average price for gasoline has been falling steadily this month, reaching $2.678 for a gallon of unleaded on Monday, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. That’s about 6 cents a gallon less than a month ago and 7 cents less than it was on the Friday before the July Fourth weekend.

Gas prices continue to fall

Gasoline pump prices continued to fall on Monday, offering a bright spot for drivers watching their wallets in the uncertain economy. The average retail price for a gallon of unleaded regular was $2.708 a gallon Monday, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. It has dropped about 4.2 cents in the past week but is around 8.1 cents more than a year ago.

U.S. gasoline prices fall, thanks to cheaper oil

U.S. gasoline prices fell to the lowest level in three weeks due to lower crude oil costs, the Energy Department said Tuesday.

The national price for regular unleaded gasoline dropped 3.1 cents over the last week to $2.73 a gallon, the department’s Energy Information Administration said in its weekly survey of service stations.

While drivers are still paying 11 cents more a gallon than a year ago, the pump price is down sharply from the record $4.11 reached two years ago. Get the full story »

Chicago gas prices jump 11 cents this week

By Ameet Sachdev | Average prices at Chicago gas pumps cracked $3 a gallon on Friday, and motorists better get used to paying that much.

Chicago gas prices have increased more than 11 cents in the past week, and 9 cents statewide, according to AAA.

Prices typically go up this time of year across the country on
anticipation that demand will rise as spring arrives. But the 3.8
percent jump this week in Chicago and the 1.6 percent bump in Illinois
is unusual and has even caught fuel analysts off guard.

Chicago-area gas prices down 15 cents in last month

Tribune staff report | Fuel prices have decreased in Illinois and
northern Indiana during the past month amid declining oil prices and the strengthening of the U.S. dollar.

AAA Chicago’s Fuel Gauge Report estimates that in Illinois, regular unleaded gasoline has
decreased 15 cents during the past month, forecasting an average cost
of $2.69 per gallon for the month of February, which is still $.78
higher per gallon than last year.
