Push for 3-D continues despite making some sick
From Hollywood studios to Japanese TV makers, powerful business interests are betting 3-D will be the future of entertainment, despite a major drawback: It makes millions of people uncomfortable or sick.
Optometrists say as many as one in four viewers have problems watching 3-D movies and TV, either because 3-D causes tiresome eyestrain or because the viewer has problems perceiving depth in real life. Nintendo: No 3-D games for kids under 6
Nintendo Co. has issued a warning that children under the age of six shouldn’t play 3-D games on its soon-to-be-released handheld game machine, as looking at 3-D images for a long period of time can have a harmful effect on the growth of young children’s eyes.
The company posted the disclaimer at the bottom of its Japanese-language Web site promoting a three-day event in Japan where people can try its new Nintendo 3DS, due to launch Feb. 26 in Japan. It asks that 6-year-olds and those younger play games on the 3DS in 2-D mode. Get the full story »
Navteq acquires 3-D urban modeling firm

3-D won’t be part of latest ‘Harry Potter’ wizardry
Warner Bros. Pictures has canceled its planned 3-D release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I,” saying it’s run out of time to do the job right.
Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution at the studio, a unit of Time Warner Inc., told Dow Jones that it ran out of time to deliver the quality 2-D to 3-D conversion that “Harry Potter deserves.” The film was scheduled for release Nov. 19 in digital 3-D and Imax 3-D. Get the full story »

Sony’s PlayStation 3 game console will work as a Blu-ray disc player for 3-D movies and music videos, not just 3-D games, with a software update download starting Sept. 21.
The free-of-charge update for movies and other content had been promised for later this year. But the date is being moved up to ride on the momentum of 3-D popularity, Sony executive Hiroshi Kawano said at the Tokyo Game Show Thursday.
