Sears to open 85 toy shops ahead of holidays

U.S. retailer Sears Holdings Corp. plans to launch 85 toy shops in select U.S. markets next month as it looks for a bigger bite of the holiday sales pie, a senior executive said.

Discover Financial sponsoring Orange Bowl

Discover Financial Services, a distant fourth in the credit-card industry, is raising its profile as the new title sponsor of one of college football’s most prestigious bowl games – the Orange Bowl, of course.

The Riverwoods-based company, which has orange in its corporate logo, replaces longtime sponsor FedEx, which ended its 21-year run.

Sears hires top marketing exec David Friedman

Sears Holdings Corp. hired Razorfish executive David Friedman to take the retailer’s top marketing post, replacing Richard Gerstein, who resigned in May.

Friedman, 46, begins his job as senior vice president and president of Sears’ marketing business unit on Sept. 13.

He was most recently president of the Americas at Razorfish in Chicago, a digital marketing company, where he was head of the firm’s retail and consumer goods practice. Before that, Friedman spent 10 years with Accenture, formerly Andersen Consulting, as an associate partner working with retail and consumer products companies. Get the full story »

Sears shares fall after report of 2Q loss

Most retail stocks were lower Thursday, with Sears Holdings Corp. shares down 7.6 percent to $62 after the department-store operator posted disappointing second-quarter results.

Sears reported a larger-than-expected second quarter loss early Thursday and that sales dropped by $93 million to $10.5 billion. Get the full story »

Sears Canada profit drops on lower sales

Retailer Sears Canada said on Tuesday its quarterly profit dropped as weaker consumer confidence weighed on sales.

For the second quarter ended July 31, net income fell to C$31.9 million, 29 Canadian cents a share. That compares with C$49.1 million, or 45 Canadian cents, for the same quarter a year earlier. Get the full story »

Sears to open Craftsman store in River North

Sears Holdings Corp. is opening a Craftsman “experience” store in a River North loft building at 233 W. Huron Street, a block away from it’s Kenmore Live Studio. Former Deloitte exec charged with insider trading

A former Deloitte and Touche LLP partner and his son were charged with insider trading in securities of Best Buy Co. Inc. , Sears Holdings Corp. and other companies, the Securities and Exchange Commission said Wednesday.

Thomas Flanagan, a former Deloitte vice chairman, used inside information obtained through his duties at the accounting firm to reap more than $430,000 in illegal profits, the SEC said. Get the full story »

Discounter Kmart Corp. is touting more exclusive brands and stepping up its mobile marketing efforts to win over cautious U.S. shoppers in what’s shaping up to be a highly competitive back-to-school season.

The unit of Sears Holdings Corp., sporting everything from embellished jeans to candy-colored staplers this season, will offer several new exclusive brands, including apparel lines “Dream Out Loud with Selena Gomez,” “Bongo” and “Rebecca Bonbon” as it takes on rivals like Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Target Corp. Sears to split space with Forever 21 in Calif. mall

Sears Holdings Corp. said it signed a long-term lease with fast-fashion apparel chain Forever 21 to occupy about 43,000 square feet of a Sears department store in an upscale mall, located in Costa Mesa, Calif.

The deal, the first of its kind, for Hoffman Estates-based Sears, gives the struggling retailer a template to make more productive use of its mall stores, many of which anchor premium shopping centers but lag the retail industry in sales per square foot. Get the full story »

Kmart is launching a new program where online reviews of video games will be displayed on store shelves, an initiative aimed at building ties between the chain’s online and in-store gaming fans.

Sears, Kmart to sell movies, music online

Sears Holdings Corp. Tuesday became the latest retailer to partner with digital media company Sonic Solutions to sell movies and television shows through an online Web site. Under Sonic’s latest multiyear deal, the operator of Sears and Kmart stores has licensed Sonic’s RoxioNow platform to sell digital entertainment under the Sears and Kmart brand names.
