‘Oprah’ final season to include Book Club pick

The first week of the final season of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” will include a selection for Oprah’s Book Club.

A Harpo spokeswoman said Thursday that Winfrey will announce her 64th and latest pick during a live episode airing on Sept. 17. That would be 14 years to the day that Winfrey announced her first book club selection — Jacquelyn Mitchard’s “The Deep End of the Ocean” — on Sept. 17, 1996.

Oprah to host show on her new network

Oprah Winfrey has agreed to boost her on-air commitment to The Oprah Winfrey Network by hosting or starring in a show on the network, according to a Securities and Exchange filing made by Discovery Communications Inc. on Friday.

As part of the amended joint-venture agreement, Discovery agreed to increase by 89 percent, to $189 million, its funding commitment to Winfrey’s OWN network. Get the full story »

Oprah network gives Rosie O’Donnell a show

Just as Oprah makes her exit, Rosie O’Donnell is coming back to daytime — with a show on the new Oprah Winfrey Network.

The network provided few details about the show except to say that it would be a one-hour daily “fun, uplifting show” based in New York. The show is scheduled to air sometime in 2011, after the network’s Jan 1 launch on the Discovery Health Channel. Get the full story »

WLS plans live, local show to replace Oprah in ‘11

Other television stations that carry “The Oprah Winfrey Show” have a syndicated afternoon hit to replace when the Chicago-based daytime juggernaut leaves the air after 25 seasons in September 2011. But WLS-Ch. 7 has no intention of ponying up for syndicated fare in the 9 a.m. time slot.

“Morning Rush” is the working title of Channel 7’s planned 9 a.m. show, according to Chicago Public Media blogger Robert Feder, who reported the station has posted a job opening for an executive producer who will be responsible for developing the show, hiring on-air and behind-the-scenes staff and overseeing production.

From the New York Post | “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” had it lowest ratings in it 24 years on the air during the week of June 28, falling to a 2.9 rating. It has never fallen below 3.0 in its entire run.

“Oprah” averaged 3.8 million viewers, almost 2 million viewers less than “Judge Judy,” which has now beaten “Oprah” 14 out of the past 16 weeks. Get the full story >>

Oprah spots sell for premium in final season

Because it will be her final year in broadcast daytime TV, Oprah Winfrey’s syndicator believes it can wring gold from her silver anniversary season. CBS Television Distribution is seeking bigger price hikes for national ads than other top syndicated shows for the coming 2010-11 season, according to Broadcasting & Cable.
