Dell leaves fiscal 4Q forecasts in dust

Dell Inc.’s quarterly earnings and margins blew past Wall Street’s expectations as component costs slid and corporations replaced aging technology, propelling its shares 6 percent higher.

Dell prepares Windows tablet in mobile push

Dell Inc. showed off a tablet device for business users that runs Microsoft’s Windows software, as the personal computer company continues to push aggressively into the mobile market.

Though many analysts believe the current version of Windows is not a good fit for touchscreen tablets, Dell said its commercial customers are looking for the familiarity and security of the Microsoft environment in a more portable package. Get the full story »

Dell expands tech services with latest purchase

Dell Inc. has agreed to buy SecureWorks, a closely held computer security company, to expand its technology services business.

3Q profit better than expected for Dell, sales weaker

Dell Inc. reported better-than-expected profit and margins and raised its yearly outlook for operating income growth, but sales came in below Wall Street’s forecast despite solid demand from large corporations.

The personal computer maker reported net earnings for the third quarter ended Oct. 29 of $822 million, or 42 cents a share, up from $337 million, or 17 cents a share, a year earlier. Get the full story »

Dell plans offer to top HP’s for 3Par

Dell Inc. is planning to submit a more competitive bid for data storage firm 3Par Inc., challenging Hewlett-Packard Co.’s offer of $24 per share, a source familiar with the talks said Wednesday.

The source said Dell’s new bid was likely to be more “competitive” than HP’s last offer of $1.6 billion, but declined to comment on how much higher its bid would be. Get the full story »

Dell’s Aero smartphone bows

Dell Inc. put its first U.S. smartphone on sale on Tuesday, making the computer maker the latest technology manufacturer to enter the competitive mobile handset market.

The Round Rock, Texas-based company said its 3.5-inch touchscreen phone, dubbed the Aero, runs on Google Inc.’s Android operating system and is available for $99.99 with a new two-year contract from AT&T Inc. and $299.99 without. It can be ordered on Dell’s Web site. Get the full story »

Sales of Dell tablet start this week at $299

Dell Inc. will begin selling its new tablet device called the Dell Streak to U.S. customers this week for $299.99 with a two-year AT&T Inc. contract, and for $549.99 without, it said Tuesday.

Dell said it would begin taking orders online Thursday.

The company is hoping the five-inch tablet, which runs on Google Inc.’s Android operating system, will help it take on Apple Inc.’s iPad.

T-shirt maker Threadless will design for Dell

The Chicago-based company Threadless, which has been putting artists’ designs on T-shirts for a decade, now is giving consumers something for their fingertips and something else for their feet.

Threadless announced on Thursday that it had partnered with Dell to offer 11 of its designs on the lids of Dell Mini or Dell Studio laptop PCs. And on Monday, it will announce a separate venture to offer six of its designs, including two new ones, on high-end Havaianas flip flops.

The partnerships highlight moves to extend the Threadless brand and the artistic expressions of its 80,000+ artists beyond the well-known T-shirts. Company executives also have had discussions about putting designs on water towers, beverage containers and integrating them into video games. Get the full story »
