Man died of head injuries at Caterpillar

A worker was crushed by the machine he was servicing at a Caterpillar facility in central Illinois, an autopsy has found.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports that an autopsy performed Monday confirms that 34-year-old Troy Bryner of Wyoming died Sunday of head injuries. Bryner was pronounced dead at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center about 40 minutes after being crushed by the machine.

Caterpillar CEO sees compensation quadruple

An Associated Press review has found that Caterpillar quadrupled CEO Doug Oberhelman’s compensation last year when he took over the top job, but his $10.4 million package was less than half what the retiring chief executive received.

Oberhelman became CEO last summer and added the chairman title later after Jim Owens retired. Owens’ compensation more than tripled in 2010 to $22.5 million, mostly from a stock grant worth $16 million. Get the full story »

Caterpillar threatens to leave Illinois over taxes

Caterpillar Inc., suggesting that it could shift jobs out of Illinois, is prodding its home state to cut government spending and roll back tax increases.

Doug Oberhelman, chief executive officer of the giant Peoria-based maker of construction and mining equipment, protested against the state’s tax and spending policies in a March 21 letter to Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, a Democrat who took office in January 2009.

“I want to stay here,” the letter said. “But as the leader of this business, I have to do what’s right for Caterpillar when making decisions about where to invest. Caterpillar to take a break from acquisitions

Caterpillar Inc. will likely take a break from acquisitions after reaching three large deals in the past year, executives at the world’s largest maker of heavy equipment said.
