AT&T to push Motorola Mobility’s Atrix 4G

AT&T Inc. is cozying up to Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. as the carrier seeks to bulk up its smartphone portfolio running on Google Inc.’s Android operating system in the wake of losing its exclusive hold on Apple Inc.’s iPhone.

AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega said the coming Motorola Atrix 4G will be the carrier’s leading device in its portfolio. Mr. de la Vega wouldn’t say how much money the carrier will spend on marketing the device, but he said it would receive amounts similar to campaigns for the iPhone. Get the full story »

Ahead of iPhone, Verizon says it may slow data

On the day the iPhone went on sale for Verizon Wireless customers, the carrier delivered a warning to its heaviest data users: Verizon reserves the right to slow down your access speed.

For the subscribers that fall within the top 5 percent of the network’s data users, Verizon said it may reduce their download speeds for the current and subsequent billing cycles, according to a memo on the carrier’s website. The company said the slow-down would most likely be periodic and during peak hours.

“Our proactive management of the Verizon Wireless network is designed to ensure that the remaining 95% of data customers aren’t negatively affected by the inordinate data consumption of just a few users,“ the memo said. Get the full story »

Motorola Mobility shares rise on AT&T pledge

Motorola Mobility shares rose 5 percent after AT&T Inc. said Motorola’s next product would be its flagship phone as the pair look to compete against the new Apple Inc. iPhone at Verizon Wireless.

AT&T, which first showed off the Motorola Atrix phone January 5, has given up its more than three years of exclusive rights to sell the iPhone. Motorola has been seeking new partners since Verizon, its biggest customer, has selling the phone.

The pairing of Motorola and AT&T was not a surprise for analysts. But after shaving as much as 20 percent off Motorola shares in the days after its earnings report last week, investors showed some relief when AT&T said in a Wall Street Journal story that it would push the phone heavily . U.S. Cellular stock hit by 4Q results

Intense competition in the cell phone industry resulted in a difficult fourth quarter for Chicago-based U.S. Cellular Corp.

The company said Thursday that its fiscal performance in the quarter ended Dec. 31 fell below its expectations because the company had to step up promotions to retain and attract customers. U.S. Cellular lost 21,000 customers during the quarter. It finished 2010 with about 6.1 million customers.

Apple to start Verizon iPhone sales Feb. 9

Apple Inc. said Wednesday that it would kick off online sales of the Verizon Wireless iPhone on Feb. 9, a day before the device hits its store shelves.

Apple’s Web sales launch of the highly-anticipated phone will follow Verizon’s online sales of a limited number of iPhones to its existing mobile customers starting at 2 a.m. Feb. 3 for delivery on or before Feb. 10. Get the full story »

Apple blocks Sony Reader app from iPhone

Apple Inc has blocked rival Sony Corp’s electronic book application from the iPhone because it would have circumvented Apple’s system for buying content.

The scrap is the latest in Apple’s long history of tense relations with media companies. They have clashed for years over pricing and how music, movies and books are sold on Apple’s mobile devices, the iPod, iPhone and iPad. Get the full story »

Google’s Android now No. 1 smartphone platform

Google’s Android dethroned Nokia’s Symbian as the most popular smartphone platform in the last quarter of 2010, ending a reign that began with the birth of the industry 10 years ago.

Research firm Canalys said on Monday phonemakers sold 32.9 million Android-equipped phones in the last quarter, roughly seven times more than a year ago, compared with Symbian’s sales of 31 million.

The phones are produced by manufacturers that include Libertyville-based Motorola Mobility, Samsung and HTC. Get the full story »

India, Pakistan demand full BlackBerry access

India rejected on Monday Research In Motion’s offer to allow it only partial access to its BlackBerry data services as neighbouring Pakistan also moved to restrict the popular smartphone’s services.

It was not immediately clear what the Indian government, which says it is driven by security concerns, would do after the Canadian smartphone maker failed to fulfill demands to monitor encrypted corporate e-mail by a Jan. 31 deadline. Verizon to offer unlimited iPhone plan — for now

Verizon Wireless added fewer smart phone customers in the fourth quarter, before getting the Apple Inc.  iPhone, as the carrier also announced plans to initially sell the iPhone with a $30 unlimited plan, its standard smart phone plan.

The news comes as Verizon Communications Inc.  reported a 2.6 percent decline in fourth-quarter revenue, hurt by its declining wireline business. The telecommunications company’s per-share earnings missed Wall Street’s expectations by 1 cent. Get the full story »

New IRS smart phone app to track tax refunds

The Internal Tax Revenue introduced its first smart phone app on Monday, called IRS2Go, which allows taxpayers to check the status of their refunds and find other tax information.

IRS2Go is a step toward “modernizing the agency and engaging taxpayers where they want when they want it,” the IRS said a press release. Get the full story »

Source: Nokia drops planned AT&T smart phone

Nokia has pulled out of a plan to launch a smart phone with No. 2 U.S. mobile provider AT&T Inc., just before the device was supposed to be announced, a person familiar with the matter said.

The touchscreen phone,  to be called the X7, could have helped Nokia gain ground in North America, where it has struggled to compete with rivals such as Apple Inc., Research in Motion and Motorola Mobility. Get the full story »
