Nasdaq to let investors trade on smartphone index

Investors hoping to ride the current wave of smartphone growth can now buy shares of a new exchange-traded fund based on the NASDAQ’s CEA Smartphone Index.

The First Trust NASDAQ CEA Smartphone Index Fund trades under the ticker symbol FONE and “provides a convenient way for investors to take advantage of the positive trends that are shaping the smartphone industry,” the NASDAQ OMX Group Inc. said in a press release. Get the full story »

3LM partners up to launch Android platform

Three Laws Mobility Inc., a mobile software firm that was just acquired by Libertyville-based Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., has partnered with a number of mobile phone manufacturers to launch a new Android-based platform for enterprise users.

Motorola Mobility just announced its acquisition of Mountainview, Calif.-based 3LM on Monday. The startup, which specializes in Android-based software and products for business users, is operating as its own business unit within Motorola. Get the full story »

Icahn’s investment in Motorola declines in value

From Bloomberg News | Activist investor Carl Icahn is loading up on shares of Clorox, his most recent investment, after the shares of some of his other investments have declined in value. According to Bloomberg data, Motorola Inc. and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. are worth less now than when Icahn’s stakes in the companies were first disclosed.

Motorola shares falls on report of cheaper iPhones

Shares of Motorola Mobility fell about 5 percent on Monday on concerns it would be particularly vulnerable to competition from the next version of Apple Inc.’s iPhone.

Motorola shares fell $1.44 or 4.6 percent at $29.71 on New York Stock Exchange after the Wall Street Journal reported Apple was developing a cheaper iPhone that is cheaper than its current model, the iPhone 4, and about half the size. Get the full story »

Nokia, Microsoft join forces on smartphones

In a major shift, Nokia Corp. Friday said it will adopt Windows Phone as its main smartphone platform, part of a broad strategic partnership with Microsoft Corp. that will see the next two years become a period of transition for the ailing handset maker.

“Nokia and Microsoft will combine our strengths to deliver an ecosystem with unrivalled global reach and scale,” said Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop, a former Microsoft employee. “Nokia is at a critical juncture, where signficant change is necessary and inevitable in our journey forward,” he said. SI bundles print, mobile subscriptions

Sports Illustrated said Friday that it’s offering new digital subscription plans, including one that bundles the printed magazine with versions that are available online, on Android smart phones and tablets, as well as  forthcoming devices.

Time Inc., the owner of the magazine and the publishing arm of Time Warner Inc. , has yet to reach an agreement with Apple Inc., maker of the iPad tablet and iPhone, to sell the subscriptions on iTunes, but its new offerings are part of a broader effort to create a subscription platform that allows customers to sign up once and access publications in any medium, including print. Apple working on smaller, cheaper iPhone

Apple Inc is working on a smaller and less expensive version of the iPhone, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing sources.

The prototype device is about one-third smaller than the iPhone 4, the report said, citing a person who had seen it.

Thin crowds greeted Verizon Wireless’ launch of Apple Inc.’s iPhone, falling short of what some had expected.

Verizon Wireless began selling the iPhone on Thursday, ending AT&T Inc.’s more than three-year stranglehold on the device in the United States.

CardStar adds Groupon to loyalty app

CardStar Inc., a company that makes a popular mobile application to organize store loyalty cards, is now including daily deals service Groupon in its app.

Boston-based CardStar said it is the first mobile loyalty app to integrate with Groupon. CardStar launched its app for the iPhone in January 2009 and has 1.3 million users. The CardStar app uses the GPS technology built into mobile phones to identify a user’s location and display Groupon deals for that area. Users will need a Groupon account to buy the deals. A long-anticipated milestone was hit late last year: Smartphone shipments overtook PCs.

Sprint to unveil dual-touchscreen smartphone

Sprint Nextel Corp. plans to unveil a smartphone with a twin set of touchscreens made by Kyocera Corp. late Monday, according to a person familiar with the device.

The device, called the Echo, features two 3.5-inch touchscreens that can be stacked side by side to form a pseudo-tablet design. Users can accomplish multiple tasks on the two screens, or drag items from one screen to the other. The phone, which runs on Google Inc.’s Android software, uses a pivot hinge that allows one screen to be tucked under the other, transforming it into a more conventional touchscreen phone. Verizon sells out of 1st batch of iPhones

Verizon Wireless ended online sales of Apple Inc.’s iPhone Thursday evening after what it said was “the most successful first day sales in the history of the company.”

The No. 1 U.S. mobile operator said it ceased pre-orders at 7:10 p.m. after opening limited pre-orders for the device to its existing customers at 3 a.m. Thursday morning. Get the full story »
