AT&T Inc. will start selling the previous-generation iPhone — the iPhone 3GS — for $49 starting Friday to customers who buy the smart phone with a two-year service contract and data plan. AT&T said it will include iPhone 3GS devices sold through AT&T and Apple.

The iPhone 3GS was released by Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple Inc. in 2009 and had been sold for $99 by AT&T and Apple since the release of the iPhone 4 last June. It can use the same iOS4 software as the iPhone 4.

AT&T, which is based in Dallas, is currently selling refurbished iPhone 3GS’ on its website for as low as $49.

Damn! I still have a samsung flip phone from like 2004/2005. At $50 this might be too good of a deal to finally upgrade.

Sell it to me without the $30 data plan and I’m in.

Bill, the $30 data plan is gone. Now it’s either $15 or $25. What you want is an iPod touch. Go buy one and quit your whining.

50 bux sounds good until you realize that it comes with AT&T service.

I’ve had a 3GS since August 2009 and I’ve been very happy with it _and_ with AT&T’s service, which I found to be better than Sprint’s, my previous provider. And with the reduced cost of the data plan, which AT&T allowed me to back into as an existing customer, it’s an even better deal.

I’ve traveled across the United States and Europe with the phone and I’ve had only sporadic problems with dropped calls or no signals. And when I did have problems or called AT&T to dispute charges on my account (such as for excessively high data charges in Europe), the company was extremely accommodating in offering me a credit or refund.

If I didn’t already have an iPhone, I’d get one at this low price, especially since it’s now nearly as good as the iPhone 4 with the latest software update.

Honestly, Steve…you sound like you work for AT&T. Did they make you post that comment?

I inherited a 3GS iPhone from my sister, and it is a pain in the tuchus. I get dropped calls several times a week. AT&T service is not all that Steve makes it out to be. As far as the reps in the store are concerned…quite often they are less than honest.

Waiting for Verizon to get iPhone! I would NEVER go back to AT&T. The sales rep lied through his teeth.+

Well, it’s not surprised to see the price drop… and kind of surprised to see it come as late as it did.
Maybe just a good gift to the kids this holiday.
