Sears said Tuesday morning that it will honor gift cards involved in a computer glitch Sunday night if they have been activated, but had canceled those that were not processed.

On Sunday night, Sears customers got a delayed Christmas present: 50 percent off online gift cards.

“[I]t was determined that this offer was being incorrectly applied to ineligible merchandise, and Sears has since disabled the offer,” the retailer said in a statement.

A spokesman still did not know Tuesday morning how many cards were involved.

This is typical when you outsource your IT Work to India. You get what you pay for.Sounds like this project was developed in India by Sears Holding in India. Kuddos to the quality work. I bet they didn’t think of these extra costs when deciding to send work overseas. They got greedy just looking at the salarie comparision and didnt fully understand the overall expense it would be. Bad Management decisions just based on salaries can ruin a whole company.

I wish everything was American made so I could pay higher prices.

This glitch happened locally Sears hes reported, sorry to the racist TaxForOutsourcing and his kind for not being able to justify his hatred.

  5. MT Dec. 27, 2010 at 1:45 pm

“TaxforOutsourcing”, sorry to burst your high&mighty bubble, but the online IT is located in Chicago, not India.

  6. just me Dec. 27, 2010 at 1:49 pm

MT, the IT may be located in Chicago….the call center is probably a whole other story. Sears owns Kmart or vice versa. Both should be renamed china mart!

  7. Sears is out of game Dec. 27, 2010 at 2:08 pm

Even at half off, you will not find deals!

  8. @Just Me Dec. 27, 2010 at 3:55 pm

What do call centers have to do with an IT problem? Some idiot gave a blanket 50% to anything labeled as “holiday,” forgetting about holiday-themed gift cards.

  9. Potentially impacted Dec. 27, 2010 at 4:21 pm

I am one of those potentially impacted. I am sure Sears has people looking into the potential loss of the glitch. Plain and simple, if the card I purchased is not honored, or at the very least some great discount is not provided, I will never shop there again.

  10. Eddies Evil Twin Dec. 27, 2010 at 6:54 pm

This is what happens when you let a 4th rate IT Department be run by K-Mart people……

  11. Uninformed Dec. 27, 2010 at 7:18 pm

TaxforOutsourcing and Eddies Evil Twin, your both grossly uneducated. IT departments dont control pricing and their IT is not outsourced to India.

Sears canceled all orders and offered no deal. They still have everyone’s money tied up for 3-5 days though. Considering how many people this affected, they are pulling down some big investment capital sponsored by their FORMER customers. They have over $1000 of my money. Thanks Sears.

  13. None Dec. 27, 2010 at 9:24 pm

Brian, they don’t have your money tied up, your bank does. And Potentially impacted, you didn’t get in on a price mistake so you’re not going to shop at Sears again? They don’t need someone self entitled like you as a customer anyway.

  14. Patrick Dec. 27, 2010 at 9:26 pm

It is poor customer service on Sears part. They canceled many of the orders without telling people why. I received a paypal refund and still have not heard from Sears as to why.

  15. None Dec. 27, 2010 at 9:33 pm

    Patrick,

    Here’s why:

    Dear Valued Customer,

We are very sorry to inform you that there was an error on sears.com yesterday related to the 50% off seasonal items offer. In some cases, 50% off was incorrectly applied to ineligible merchandise. Unfortunately, your order was impacted by this error so we have cancelled your order and credited your account.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience our error caused you.

    Sincerely,
    Sears Customer Care

Thousands of customers got the below email..And sears is holding several hundread thousand dollars of consumers money for atleast 2 to 3 days, which is fraud..All the people are dissapointed ..Lot of people are waging a dissapointment war against Sears..Dont Shop at Sears anymore!! their service sucks..this happened to me several times and I hear the same from other people..Sears stock price is going down..

  17. Jeeper Dec. 27, 2010 at 10:58 pm

I haven’t shopped at Sears in over 20 years. Sales? Their prices are beat week after week by other retailers.

  18. right! Dec. 28, 2010 at 3:35 a.m.

The poster none obviously works for Sears or K-Mart. If Sears led people to believe that they would get these cards for half price, then they owe them something more than just a form letter. Imagine shopping at the grocery store, paying for your groceries, then when you try to exit the store, you are told to give it all back becuase the pricing was wrong, and we will mail you a check in a few days. I suppose that would be Ok woith you, none.

  19. Deal Hammer Dec. 28, 2010 at 4:14 a.m.

SEARS DID NOT CANCEL ALL ORDERS! Let’s be clear on this.

I got my $100 gift card for $50 plus the two items I immediately ordered at 50% off as well. Some of us that didn’t get too greedy ARE getting our stuff.

If you want to get a good deal, you have to jump in immediately and do it head first. This went from start to finish in only a couple hours.

  20. can't you read? Dec. 28, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Perhaps some of you should read the article again. It clearly states that if the cards were activated they will be honored. Fortunately, I am one of those customers! Thank you Sears!! everyone else: Suckas!!!

  21. Brian Dec. 28, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Dear None: Sears has canceled my orders with NO notification to me. My bank says they HAVE NOT refunded my money and the transactions are NOT pending but COMPLETE! Go ahead and explain that without being rude please!

the problem i have is that i sent egift cards to a family member who was wanting to purchase a large item (outdoor shed) from sears. i did not know of the glitch, just thought i would save postage or western union fees from sending them the cash to buy it. my inlaws received the gift cards less than an hour after i ordered and paid, and they were extremely happy about being able to get the building they wanted. when they tried to use the egift card, there was no money tied to the account. i was extremely embarrassed. kicker is, i called sears, the full amount was taken out of my bank account, but the card was voided. this was 9 days ago. i also called my bank. the money was not credited back, or in memo. everytime i call sears and they pull up my order number, i get told “the system is down”, “we are having tech difficulties”, “call back in three days”, but then they offer to help me place a new order for the items. if someone screwed up, fine, everyone does, but just FIX it already and give me my $300 back or my $300 gift card.
