Federal Signal Corp. posted a lower quarterly profit Wednesday because of expenses related to newly acquired businesses and an increase in legal costs associated with ongoing litigation over its emergency sirens. The manufacturer reported third-quarter earnings of $2.5 million, or 4 cents a share, down from $4.4 million, or 9 cents a share, a year earlier.

Revenues rose 12 percent to $182 million, despite lower municipal spending on safety and security systems and fire rescue vehicles. New orders were driven by the Oak Brook company’s environmental solutions group.

Federal Signal has been dealing with lawsuits brought by fire fighters who allege that the company’s sirens have caused hearing loss. Legal expenses were $1 million in third quarter. The company also recorded $3.8 million in acquisition-related expenses in the quarter.
