By Wailin Wong | Social networking platform Facebook racked up the most U.S. hits on its Web site last week, edging past search giant Google to be the country’s most-visited site for that period, according to data from research firm Hitwise.

Hitwise’s director of research, Heather Dougherty, said in a blog post
that Facebook and Google together made up about 14 percent of all U.S.
Internet visits in the week ending March 13. Facebook represented 7.07
percent of visits, just over Google’s 7.03 percent.

Before last week,
Facebook had also hit the top ranking on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day
and New Year’s Day, Hitwise said.

Data showed that Facebook’s market share of visits surged 185 percent
last week compared with the same week in 2009. During the same time
period, Google saw its visits rise 9 percent.

They also know who you associate with, where you log onto the internet, what websites you’ve visited and so on and so on…

Hits is what is being counted. Yet, does it really matter? Facebook is a social networking site. Google is not. Hits don’t really mean that much here. Does Facebook have the search capabilities and all the other Google products? I think not.
Comparing Google to Yahoo or Bing makes sense.
Comparing Facebook to Myspace makes sense.
Comparing Google to Facebook does not.

Can everyone please stop using the term “hits”? It doesn’t mean anything close to what you think it does.

If this isn’t an example of what the new business environment is going to be like as this country pulls out of recession, I don’t know what is. A few college kids who struck gold by programming a website for other college kids, whodda thunk? BTW, of course the number of hits matters because Google has consistently been rated as one of the highest rated stocks since it’s IPO, meanwhile Facebook is still a privately held company, yet it gets over 7% of internet site visits here, wow!
