Kraft, others dinged in tainted tomato bribery plot

From the New York Times | In the last 14 months, purchasing managers at Kraft, Dominick’s parent Safeway and Frito Lay have pleaded guilty to taking bribes from SK Foods, one of the nation’s largest tomato processor, in exchange for accepting moldy, damaged tomatoes.

    Hmm. What would an Ayn Rand-obsessed right wing mealy-minded republican do? Oh yeah. Nothing. Let the almighty all-knowing all-benevolent marketplace solve the problem. On the other hand, sane people would want this prosecuted to the full extent of the law. We should be able to trust what we buy. When people violate that trust, there must be measures in place to disincentivize such actions. Otherwise we’ll be unknowingly feeding our babies sugar water instead of apple juice, and yes that actually did happen.
