Tribune Co. bankruptcy settlement breaks down

The settlement at the heart of Tribune Co.’s proposed reorganization plan has fallen apart, casting doubt on whether the Chicago-based media conglomerate can continue to control its own fate in bankruptcy court.

At a status hearing in Delaware Friday, Tribune Co. lead attorney James Conlan of Sidley Austin said the company planned to file unilateral amendments to its plan by next Friday and threatened to cast the case into extended litigation if the warring parties can’t come to an agreement.

WGN moving John Williams to afternoons

Midday host John Williams is moving yet again on the WGN-AM 720 schedule, this time to early afternoons, where he will be reunited with on-air partner and newsman Steve Bertrand.

The tweak to the schedule, the latest change of several at Chicago Tribune parent Tribune Co.’s radio station, calls for Williams to slide into the 12:30 p.m.-to-3 p.m. weekday shift, with the Aug. 9 arrival of Cincinnati import Mike McConnell in the 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Weigel’s WCIU to air Garry Meier special

Garry Meier, co-star with former radio partner Steve Dahl of 1980s TV efforts such as “It’s Too Early” and the award-winning “Greetings from Graceland,” has landed a one-hour interview special with Weigel Broadcasting’s WCIU-Ch. 26.

“The Garry Meier Special” is set for 10:30 p.m. July 11 on Channel 26. It represents something new for the 3 p.m.-to-7 p.m. weekday host on Chicago Tribune parent Tribune Co.’s WGN-AM 720, although Meier was a full-time WGN-Ch. 9 feature reporter for around nine months in 1995.
