5 stars to be more elusive in new car crash tests

The government’s criteria for testing vehicles’ crash safety ratings are a-changin’.

For the past 30 years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been using its 5-star testing program to test how well vehicles sustain potential crashes. That rating system will soon expand to testing how well vehicles avoid accidents in the first place.

In other words, under these new guidelines, it’s going to become much more difficult for a vehicle to earn a 5-star safety rating, meaning it’s about to get easier for consumers to identify safe cars.

Nissan recalls 51,100 Cubes

Nissan Motor Co. is recalling 51,100 Cube compacts in North America after U.S. safety regulators said a fuel leak could cause fire after a crash, the regulator and the automaker said Monday.

The chance that 2009 and 2010  Cubes could leak fuel if struck from the rear at 50 miles per hour led to the recall, documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show. Get the full story »

Toyota has fix for recalled Siennas

From Bloomberg News | Toyota has come up with the repair for some 600,000 Sienna minivans recalled three months ago because the spare tire cable could corrode.

Models from 1998-2010 are included.

NHTSA: Toyota recall probe not done

The government said Wednesday it had not reached any conclusions about whether Toyota drivers may be to blame for their vehicles suddenly accelerating, a problem that has led to millions of recalled cars and trucks since last year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement that its engineers were continuing to investigate the possible causes of sudden acceleration in Toyotas along with scientists and researchers with the National Academy of Scientists and NASA. Get the full story »

Lexus recall 3 years in making, Toyota says

Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday that it had received reports more than three years ago of faulty engine valve springs at the center of a U.S. recall of nearly 139,000 luxury Lexus vehicles it announced last week.

Toyota plans to recall 270,000 luxury Lexus and Toyota Crown vehicles across the U.S., Japan, Canada, Australia, Europe and other countries due to the potential defects that could lead to engine failures. Get the full story »

NHTSA probes steering in Mazda3, BMW Z4

The government is opening investigations into possible power steering problems in Mazda3 and BMW Z4 cars.

The investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration involve more than 290,000 Mazda3s from the 2007-2009 model years and nearly 50,000 Z4s from the 2003-2005 model years. Get the full story »
