Honda to end Element production in April

Honda Motor said Friday that it would cease production in April of its Element crossover, a slow-selling boxy vehicle that never quite caught on with the target audience of younger buyers.

Honda has only sold about 325,000 Elements in the United States since it entered production in December 2002 and the vehicle will end with the 2011 model year, Honda said.

“This vehicle was positioned as a ‘dorm room on wheels,’ but it never quite got the hip reputation’,” Edmunds.com senior analyst Jessica Caldwell said. Get the full story »

Wholesale inventories rise 1.3% in July

Inventories held by wholesalers surged in July by the largest amount in two years, while sales rebounded after two straight declines.

Slowdown hits Penney harder than most retailers in 2Q

J.C. Penney Co. forecast a full-year profit below Wall Street expectations and stoked concerns that it may need further discounts to clear merchandise built up last quarter, sending its shares lower.

Penney said its shoppers, who tend to have a lower household income and are more likely to turn to discount chains and dollar stores when budgets are tight, were vulnerable to weak economic conditions. Get the full story »
