Chicago-area gas prices up 11% in last month

Gas prices continued to rise Monday, driven higher for nearly two weeks straight by the turmoil in Libya, with analysts expecting prices to keep climbing.

In the Chicago area, gas prices have risen 11 percent, or 37 cents, in the last month to an average of $3.716, according to a daily survey by motorist group AAA. U.S. gas prices have increased for 13 days in a row, rising nearly 34 cents in that time, the second-biggest price jump in the history of the gasoline market, according to the Lundberg Survey. Gas prices up 55 cents from a year ago

U.s. gasoline prices have jumped another nickel per gallon — pushing prices to 55 cents more than a year ago — according to a study published Sunday.

The average price for a gallon of regular is $3.18, the Lundberg Survey found. That’s up 5 cents from two weeks ago, publisher Trilby Lundberg said. In Chicago, the average price for a gallon of regular is $3.284, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge report. Get the full story »

Gas prices 13.6% higher than last December

Holiday shoppers will need to bump up their budget for one purchase this year, and they can’t even put it under the tree: gasoline.

The price of fuel is up 13.6 percent from last December and 76 percent higher than  December 2008, according to a new study from the Oil Price Information Service. Get the full story »

Demand for gasoline drops 2.7% as price rises

U.S. retail gasoline demand fell 2.7 percent last week as prices rose to their highest level this year, MasterCard Advisors’ SpendingPulse report showed Tuesday.

More Illinois residents to travel for Thanksgiving

More than 2 million Illinois travelers will fly or drive to a destination over Thanksgiving weekend this year, a nearly 12 percent increase from the 2009 holiday, AAA Chicago said Tuesday.

The motoring organization said 2.25 million Illinois residents are expected to travel, with 2.1 million in cars and 87,000 flying. The average cost of an unleaded gallon of gasoline is $3.05 in Illinois and $2.90 in neighboring Indiana, AAA Chicago said.

The projected increase in Illinois Thanksgiving travelers is slightly more than what is forecast nationwide. AAA expects an 11.4 percent jump in the number of travelers from 2009, with 42.2 million people going at least 50 miles from their home.
