Motorola confirms Xoom price: $600 with contract

Motorola Mobility Inc.’s Xoom tablet, which debuted to positive buzz when it was introduced earlier this year, will go on sale at Verizon Wireless on Thursday at a subsidized price of $599.99 or $799.99 without a contract, the companies said Tuesday.
The pricing confirms remarks made by Motorola Mobility Chief Executive Sanjay Jha on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress show in Spain. Reuters had also quoted Jha as saying, “Competing with Apple, you have to deliver premium products.”
Motorola introduced the Xoom in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The device is the first to run Honeycomb, a version of Google’s Android operating system that is specifically designed for tablets. Get the full story »
Barnes & Noble Nook on way to Wal-Mart shelves
Barnes & Noble Inc. will ship its Nook electronic readers to 2,500 Wal-Mart stores this month to reach more shoppers ahead of the holiday season.
The devices will hit Wal-Mart shelves as soon as Oct. 24 and will be available on the discount chain’s Web site, the world’s largest bookstore chain said in a statement Thursday. Get the full story »

A new fund could help bring high speed Internet to unserved and remote areas of the United States, U.S. telecommunications regulators said on Thursday.
The Federal Communications Commission proposed allocating universal service funds — fees consumers pay telephone companies to subsidize landline phone services for low-income and rural families — to create a “mobility fund” to expand broadband Internet to areas without service. Get the full story »

Clearwire Corp. launched Monday a new pay-as-you-go 4G mobile Internet service aimed at a young urban consumers in Chicago and 48 other markets.
Clearwire launched 4G service in Chicago late last year, offering broadband speeds that top those of 3G networks and allow for bandwidth-intensive activities such as streaming high-definition video. Sprint and Comcast also offer 4G products and services, which run on Clearwire’s network.
The new pay-as-you-go service is called Rover and will be branded separately from Clearwire’s other 4G offerings. Mike Sievert, Clearwire’s chief commercial officer, said in a conference call that Rover is geared toward city-dwelling youth between the ages of 18 and 24. Get the full story »
Netflix releases long-awaited iPhone app

Netflix unveiled its long-awaited app for the iPhone on Thursday, sending the company’s shares almost 2 percent higher.

AT&T to build 80 new cell towers in Illinois
