What some people might not know is that under the FTC’s rules, a retailer can legally call you without violating the FTC’s registry.

Study says password changes are useless

From The Boston Globe | A study has concluded what lots of people have long suspected: Many of these irritating security measures forcing users to change passwords are a waste of time. The study, by a top researcher at Microsoft, found that changing passwords regularly does not stop online infiltration. “Most security advice simply offers a poor cost-benefit trade-off to users,” the author of the study wrote.

More complaints about possible census scams

A Tribune reader from Homewood e-mailed Problem Solver Jon Yates after having a discussion with co-workers about this year’s census count. “Two women in our office mentioned that their Census forms asked for Social Security numbers,” she wrote. “I showed them my form, which did not ask for that info. Now, they are worried that they could have been victims of a Census scam.”

The Problem Solver called Census Bureau spokeswoman Eun Kim, who said Doolan’s co-workers were right to be suspicious. Census forms do not ask for Social Security numbers, Kim said.
