Convention officials to show customers cost-cutting plans

By Kathy Bergen | Chicago’s beleaguered convention officials will meet next week with
more than 40 trade show customers in an effort to explain efforts to
overhaul McCormick Place operations and cut exhibitor costs.

The Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau, which books shows into the
facility, will host the roundtable on Feb. 17. The Metropolitan Pier
and Exposition Authority, the state-city agency known as McPier that
owns and operates the convention hall, will participate as well.

Latest from media day at the Chicago auto show

Bob Carter, vice president of North American sales for Toyota, said the
automaker nearly canceled its introduction of the 2011 Avalon in
Chicago, “but it was important to show consumers we are out in front of
the recall situation.”

“The Chicago show is critical for Toyota because it will let us gauge consumer reaction to the recalls,” he said.

SuperComm cancels trade show at McCormick

By Kathy Bergen | The dwindling SuperComm telecommunications trade show is canceling its
2010 exhibition at McCormick Place, which had been set for October.

The cancellation comes after the show’s manager, Reed Exhibitions, pulled out, citing financial projections for the show. The move does not reflect unhappiness with McCormick Place, a spokesman said.

Chicago convention officers to address costs

By Kathy Bergen | Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau officers decided Friday they will seek a meeting with a state official who has taken issue with the bureau’s executive compensation practices.

The officers hope to meet with Warren Ribley, director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, to listen to his concerns, answer questions and inform him of cost-containment moves already taken by the bureau, said Mike Cassidy, a Starwood hotel executive who chairs the bureau’s board.
