United Parcel Service is requiring photo identification for retail shipping as it expands security during its peak season after two parcel bombs were intercepted in October.
The world’s largest package delivery company, which expects a 7.5 percent rise to about 430 million deliveries this holiday season, said on Tuesday that retail customers will not be permitted to ship without a government-issued picture ID at the UPS Store, Mail Boxes Etc and authorized shipping outlets worldwide. United Parcel Service Inc. said Monday that it would raise rates by a net 4.9 percent starting Jan. 3.

The Obama administration on Monday proposed the first fuel efficiency and emissions standards for big tractor trailors and other commercial trucks that run mainly on diesel fuel.
The joint Transportation Department and Environmental Protection Agency initiative covers a range of vehicles from delivery vans to long-haul rigs and is expected to cut nearly 250 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions over the lifespans of vehicles produced within the program’s first five years.
