Mitsubishi to produce Outlander Sport in Illinois

Mitsubishi to announce new vehicle for Normal

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is poised to announce the production of a new vehicle at its Normal plant today in a deal backed by $30 million in government incentives. The deal is expected to breathe new life into a facility that, for years, has operated with an uncertain future.

The plant produces the Galant, Endeavor, Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder, among the oldest and least popular of the Mitsubishi line. The Japanese auto manufacturer has announced plans to phase out their production by 2014, a move that would have eventually meant layoffs in Normal and an end to Mitsubishi production in the U.S. Get the full story »

Downstate Mitsubishi plant to build new vehicle

Mitsubishi Motors says its plant in Normal will remain open and begin producing a new model soon.

Dan Irvin, a spokesman for the Japanese auto manufacturer, said Thursday that the company will wait several weeks to release the details about the new model, when it will go into production and what that will mean for staffing at the plant.

The plant employs 1,100 people and is one of the largest employers in the Bloomington-Normal area.

Union workers there earlier this year agreed to wage concessions the company said it needed to keep the plant open.

Irvin said the four models now produced at the plant will be phased out. Those are the Galant, Eclipse and Spyder and the Endeavor sport-utility vehicle.

Nissan, Mitsubishi strengthen ties in Japan

Nissan Motor Co.  and Mitsubishi Motors Corp.  said Tuesday that they will supply more models to each other and explore  jointly developing vehicles as they look to spark sales in the sagging Japanese market and to meet increasing demand in emerging markets.

The two Japanese carmakers said that Nissan will provide a light van and upper-end sedans to Mitsubishi Motors to broaden its lineup in the domestic market, while Mitsubishi will provide a sport-utility vehicle model to Nissan to enhance its growing SUV segment in the Middle East. Nissan returns to profit; Mitsubishi narrows loss

Nissan Motor Co. veered back into the black in its latest quarter as global car sales rebounded, while its smaller rival Mitsubishi Motors Corp. narrowed its quarterly loss.
