Weight-loss surgery backed for some diabetics

A diabetes expert group backed the use of weight-loss surgery Monday for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in severely obese patients.

Hospira taps Allergan president as new CEO

Hospira Inc. has named F. Michael Ball, president of Botox maker Allergan Inc., as its next top executive, succeeding the only CEO the Lake Forest-based maker of generic injectable drugs has had since it was spun off from Abbott Laboratories.

Ball, 55, will Hospira become chief executive March 28, replacing Christopher Begley, who will retire after nearly seven years in the top job, the company announced late Monday. Hospira was spun off as a public company from North Chicago-based Abbott Laboratories in 2004. Get the full story »

FDA seeks more data on breast implants, rare cancer

Women who have breast implants may be at greater risk for a rare but serious cancer, U.S. health regulators warned Wednesday.

The Food and Drug Administration said it is looking at a possible link between silicone and saline breast implants and a type of anaplastic large cell lymphoma, which targets the immune system. The agency said overall it still believes implants are safe. Get the full story »
