Loehmann’s on State Street to close

Loehmann’s is closing its State Street store Saturday after operating for only three years.

The off-price women’s clothing chain opened the two-level, glass-encased showcase store in 2007, calling it one of its most upscale stores at the time. The store at 151 N. State St. anchors a prominent shopping corner in the Loop along with Macy’s Midwest flagship, Borders book store and the struggling Block 37 shopping mall.

Officials at the New York-based retail chain were unavailable for comment.

Loehmann’s filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November and shuttered stores in Oak Brook and Naperville. It continues to operate stores in Northbrook and Morton Grove.

The popular retail chain, founded in 1921 by Frieda Loehmann , sells clothes from brands such as Michael Kors, Calvin Klein and Donna Karan at more than 40 stores in 11 states, according to its website.

The State Street store’s closing was first reported by Crain’s Chicago Business.

This website printapons and retail me not very beneficial to increasing the speed of online shopping as well as the ease of finding the best price and coupons, which is the whole reason for shopping online.

meh, they don’t care about plus-sized women. They pretty much only carry petite sizes. I guess they haven’t read about the fact that most people aren’t petite anymore.

    see ya

It’s too bad they had great high end brands at good prices. I guess I’ll have to shop at the NYC store in Chelsea which is an awesome store! For the plus size people complaining they should shop at Sears or somewhere like that. Designer clothing normally isn’t designed for over weight people.

Baloney, J-chi. Saavy designers offer stylish clothes for plus sizes. It’s the less saavy retail channels that fail to carry them. Perhaps that’s why Loehmanns is going belly up. They became too dependent on snobs like you who are in the minority.

Sad to see Loehmann’s go. I liked it.

Perry, Loehmann’s also carries sizes that are neither petite nor plus-sized. Please don’t lump people with healthy body frames into the same category as petites. I would never fit into petites.

And I would be swimming in plus sizes. To clarify. There is an in between.

It’s too bad that they’re closing up that shop, but I could sort of see the writing on the wall during the holiday period. Most of the other stores on State Street (even within Block 37) appeared to have high traffic, while Loehmann’s seemed to be conspicuously quiet. I think that at least some of that had to do with the fact that the chain itself is struggling and probably as a result their selection has deteriorated. Also, they have a very small men’s section, unlike Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx and other discounters down the street. Hopefully someone else fills that space soon.

I am not surprise at all. This store to me was a high-end version of Nordstrom Rack and Filene’s Basement with a limited men’s section.

Whenever I go downtown, I rarely see people going to this store. Maybe one of those stores that had plans on leasing space at Block 37 can move in. Or even Khols, since there is only one located in the city limits.

Kenneth Cole is closing their store on Michigan Avenue, but at least, you can buy his stuff at other stores and on their website.

At least they are still open where their real market is–Morton Grove and Northbrook.

While not much different than the Marshall’s next to it, the Nordstrom’s Rack in the same shopping center as the other two seems to me to be catering to teen prostitutes, or people with that fashion sensibility. Several stores in Northbrook Court also do.

Perry Mason, plus-sized is a Sears or Lane Bryant domain. You’re right–Loehmann’s doesn’t care about tubby people because that is not their demographic.

Too bad, I dont shop there but I walked past it all the time and it was nicely designed and looked great, especially at night when you could see into it. I hope the space doesnt just sit there.

loehmann’s didn’t carry petite sizes. all their stuff was generally too big and their style and quality wasn’t even all that great. it was like another macy’s. meh:|
