How depressing! I remember going to State Street as a kid with my parents, CPS, Field’s and all of the other stores filled with Christmas shoppers. The sights and sounds of a vibrant city. Now we have Macy’s (eww) and soon Target (bigger eww) in a downtown that is a shell of it’s former self. I’m glad I’m 50…

I can’t believe people think this is a good idea. Absolutely horrible!!! I agree State Street used to be such a wonderful place to shop – Marshall Field’s (amazing) Carson’s (great) CD Peacock (wonderful)… not it is all cheap junk! Horrible state of our city.

What is so ironic about this is that Target used to own Marshall Field’s and were so short sighted in dumping it and Field’s ending up in Macy’s hand.
I don’t shop Target or Macymart for that matter for this whole fiasco. Chicago downtown deserves better. There are enough discount stores already on State.
It is such a shame; the store will be decorated in “garrish red bulls-eyes all over. What an architectural gem converted to another discount retailer. These mass merchants just don’t get downtown shopping.
Tell you what Target, why don’t you convince Macy’s to sell you back the Marshall Field’s State Street store and name. That way you could convert the Wabash side to Target and bring back the iconic Field’s store that everyone misses!!

I’ll start by that I despise Macy’s and have been boycotting that store ever since they converted from the Marshall Field’s nameplate. That said, I know for a fact that Target wanted to be an anchor tennant in Block 37 back around 2001/2002 timeframe. Mayor Daley nixed the idea because he didn’t a “discount store” on State Street. He held out the grandeous hope of luring Harrod’s to State Street. Given the influx of downtown residential development, Target identified State Street as an underserved location and they were correct.

Block 37 has been a long running disaster and Carson’s left three years ago. Mayor Daley should have been more realistic and helped Target find a spot on to help boost customer foot traffic on State Street. I don’t view Target as a “lowering” of State Street. I see it as a relevant and trendy retailer who will boost State Street. The merchandise at Target is no better or worse quality than what can be bought at H&M, and yet people flock to H&M. If target is really serious about occupying the old Carson’s space, I say “Welcome to State Street!”

Everybody yearns for the good old days of big department stores. Reality is so hard to fathom. Everything must change. Everything. The age of the big behemoth department stores is a thing of the past. There were once 7 big department stores on State St. Now there are two and not without reason. Shopping on line is so easy.

Remember, Target didn’t sell Field’s to Macy’s. Target sold it to May, who claimed to want to hold onto the Field’s name and even brought back the old logo. Within a year, May sold itself to Macy’s who proceeded to dumb down the store. Target would be an upgrade to what is currently a mostly empty building.

I love Target but the thought of a Target in that beautiful building seems so tacky.

Wow, I miss Field’s too, so sad that the city is selling out left and right. Check my website if you want to remember what Field’s was like.

As a kid in the late 1960’s, I remember the big department stores on the east side of State Street. This included the majestic Chicago Theater and another State Street favorite-Bob Elfman’s restaurant. Very impressive and grand. But then again, I remember what was on the west side of State Street…wig stores, cheesy clothing shops and off-brand appliance stores with strobe lights in their windows.
