Talk queen Oprah Winfrey will announce her latest book selection on her show today, and her choice, according to the Orlando Sentinel, is actually two books: “A Tale of Two Cities” and “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens.

In September, Winfrey chose Jonathan Franzen’s book “Freedom” as the first selection for the 25th and final season of her talk show. She announced that month that despite rumors, her famed book club would continue. “I will have book selections coming all season long and when I move over to OWN, my new network, the book club is coming with me,” she told her audience.

Think what this could do for his career…I bet he sees a huge Oprah bump in sales and this may inspire him to write again after a long bout with writer’s block

What a perfect example of lemming mentality. Teacehers, professors and just regular readers can recommend Dickens and receive an “eh, who cares?” response. Now that Winfrey recommneds, suddenly they’ll be important. And I have a hard time believing that she recently read the two novels she recommended. It’s both laughbale and sad that people blindly follow her. No doubt the woman has power and she uses it to pander to the simple minded fools who think celebrity automatically translates to wisdom and taste. Incidentally, A “Tale of Two Cities” has been my favorite novel since I read it over 40 years ago in high school.

People that wait with baited breath on Oprah’s every move and word are in serious need of therapy. Who cares what she thinks? Is she the almighty savior?

    Get a life people!

Indeed, this is the best of times…and the worst. Oprah picked tremendous, timeless works of literature that address the human condition while stirring in willing hearts compassion for others. Bravo! Now, the worst…why do thousands of mindless people need a simple tv personality, like Oprah, to get them to read classic literature? My recommendation is for Oprah’s followers to pick up these books now and to then TURN OFF YOUR TELEVISON SETS. You won’t regret it!

Y’know, I don’t care why people read, as long as they keep doing it. At some point, something has to sink in.
