For-profit education provider DeVry Inc. said fall 2010 new student enrollment declined at some of its colleges, hurt by lower demand. DeVry, along with other for-profit education companies, has been under fire from regulators and the Obama administration for saddling students with big debts and not fully preparing them for jobs.

DeVry said the decline in student starts at its Carrington Colleges, which offers programs in healthcare, in October and November was worse-than-expected as fewer adult students enrolled for its programs.

Student starts at Carrington Colleges fell by about 19 percent, while total students enrollment fell about 6 percent. New student enrollment at DeVry University fell by almost 5 percent.

The Downers Grove, Illinois-based DeVry said Carrington was focussing more on direct response communications, and making additional investment in website interface and admissions processes to better serve prospective students.
