First Midwest Bancorp Inc., the $8.38 billion-asset parent of First Midwest Bank, has named Amcol International Chief Executive Lawrence Washow to its board of directors.

“Larry brings extensive managerial experience and business judgment to our board,” the Itasca-based banking company said.

Washow joined Hoffman Estates-based Amcol in 1978. He has been CEO since 2000 and just announced his retirement effective Dec. 31. Publicly traded Amcol, which had 2009 sales of more than $700 million, makes specialty minerals for markets that include metalcasting, detergents, pet products, building materials and personal care.

First Midwest has about 100 branches in 64 communities, mostly in the Chicago area.
