Chicago is one of the least safe U.S. cities for drivers, according to a new annual survey by Allstate Insurance Co.

Out of 200 U.S. cities, Chicago ranked #167, Allstate said Thursday. The company’s data show that the average driver in Chicago will experience an auto collision every 7.6 years. This is a marginal improvement over the 7.3-year figure in the 2009 survey, but still puts Chicago behind other cities such as New York (#159) and San Diego (#103).

Allstate noted that U.S. cities with populations over 1 million people are more likely than the national average to experience a collision. Fort Collins, Colo., which has a population of roughly 140,600 as of July 2009, emerged as the safest driving city for 2010. Residents in Fort Collins go an average 14.5 years between collisions.

As for other Illinois cities, Rockford was ranked #38 and Naperville came in at #133.

Allstate said it analyzed internal property damage reported claims between January 2007 and December 2008 to come up with the rankings for its 2010 survey, which was its sixth such study. The company defines an auto crash as any collision that generates a property damage claim. Allstate said its results are indicative of national trends because its auto policies represent roughly 11 percent of all auto policies in the U.S.

If we actually could prevent bad drivers from getting behind the wheel, the danger would drop by orders of magnitude. Too many people that do not belong on the road are driving. Stricter testing regimes to get the license, more frequent testing to keep it, and stricter penalties for accidents and traffic violations…

I have been driving since I was 14 years old, in 1928. I have never had an accident.

I just love to hit the open road on week ends, when I get a little time off from my tree trimming job. I like to headover to Iowa on good ol’ I 80.

Somethimes I get my ‘56 Caddy cranked up to 110 mph on the straight a ways. A ball with the top down.

Me and my 29 year old blond bomb shell of an old lady can’t get enough it it. The road. Or the other. See all you land lubbers on the wide open trail – you betcha!

I can easily beleive this story. Chicago is one of the last places I would want to take my partner driving during a visit. The drivers are way too aggressive, and just down right rude.

We were up there a couple of years ago and those nasty Chicago motorists just kept cutting us off and making sickening animal signs at us. It was just awful.

We even had to stop at a straight bar to get a couple of drinkies; just to get our shattered nerves back under control. Never again honey.

    Love to all, Reddy
