Baskin-Robbins dropping 5 flavors

Posted July 16, 2010 at 5:41 a.m.

From CNN | Baskin-Robbins is putting five of its signature 31 flavors in the deep freeze. The company, which has thousands of outlets around the globe, is replacing Caramel Praline Cheesecake, Campfire S’mores, Apple Pie a La Mode and Superfudge Truffle. French Vanilla, a staple since 1945, is out, too.

Srinivas Kumar, chief brand officer at the company, said “over the decades we have retired some of our iconic flavors into our deep freeze — like ‘Miami Ice’ from the 1980s and ‘Beatlenut’ in the 1960s — but never before have five flavors gone into the deep freeze at one time.”

That’s cold. And it’s ice cream lovers in the United States who’ll likely miss the flavors most. The Illinois-based National Ice Cream Retailer’s Association says the U.S is the world’s top ice cream-consuming nation.

The U.S. ice cream industry generates more than $21 billion in annual sales, and about 9 percenet of all the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream, according to the International Dairy Foods Association.

There’s no word yet on what the new Baskin-Robbins flavors will be. And as for the old ones, they’ll only be available through the end of July.

    Hi

  2. Becky July 16, 2010 at 8:04 a.m.

Drobbing? What is drobbing? It must be hard to drob flavors. It might be easier to proofread.

  3. HeyNow July 16, 2010 at 8:12 a.m.

@Becky…Drobbing is like when you lose a cell phone signal. “My cell phone keeps drobbing calls.” The call drobbed.” LOL!

The Chicago Tribune – A company run by college interns !

  5. JG in SC July 16, 2010 at 8:32 a.m.

My ex- owned a Baskin-Robbins in the 80s. In the past, upper-managemrnt consisted of people who had actually worked at or owned franchises. When people who had business degrees started calling the shots, the whole brand was tarnished. Once an innovator, now only an also-ran…

Those darned people with college degrees. Shame on them #JG in SC. Can’t they just leave the franchise ice cream stores to the dumb?!?!?!?!

  7. WOot July 16, 2010 at 8:42 a.m.

Do they still have Baseball Crunch, or whatever that name is..

  8. Peter July 16, 2010 at 8:42 a.m.

droBBing? Really. This is the kind of gross error that tells me I should droB my subscription.

  9. NANCY July 16, 2010 at 8:45 a.m.

Srinivas Kumar – chief brand officer – Seriously, do you really need to know any more???

  10. jack (me) July 16, 2010 at 8:56 a.m.

Given the names listed, it doesn’t sound like they were selling much of those five flavors, anyway, so they may as well substitute something else.

If they cancel Jamoca Almond Fudge, let us know.

  11. Questioning July 16, 2010 at 8:59 a.m.

@NANCY – What is your point? Are you openly saying you have a problem with successful, intelligent Asian Indians?

  12. JAD62 July 16, 2010 at 9:37 a.m.

Questioning, perhaps Nancy is noting that maybe an Asian Indian may not understand the tastes of the American ice cream consumer.
I don’t doubt that some flavors come and go. I would seriously question getting rid of French Vanilla, though.
And, drobbing is Tribune speak for incompetence. Shoot, b and p aren’t even close on the keyboard!!!

    I’ll drobb you!

  14. Anne July 16, 2010 at 10:04 a.m.

I bet that they add burrito, taco, chorizo, jalapeño, and salsa flavors.

  15. menocu July 16, 2010 at 10:24 a.m.

how can they drop vanilla? isn’t that a staple in milkshakes and what not.

  16. QuietlyWatching777 July 16, 2010 at 10:26 a.m.

I count 6 flavors gone. Who writes the headlines?

  17. Uly July 16, 2010 at 11:40 a.m.

Who writes these headlines? Somebody who can count:

    1 Caramel Praline Cheesecake
    2 Campfire S’mores
3 Apple Pie a La Mode
    4 Superfudge Truffle
    5 French Vanilla

Not sure how you got six out of that list, unless you counted Caramel Praline and Cheesecake as two different flavors.

a LOOOONG time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, BR had a flavor called Peppermint Fudge Ribbon. It made the most awesome hot fudge sundae EVER and they haven’t had it for years. Whenever I ask about it at BR, I get a very quizzical look.

I wish they’d bring it back. I’d buy it by the gallon.

  19. St Joe Michigan July 16, 2010 at 12:09 pm

One of my all time favorites is a hot fudge sundae made with French Vanilla. I was in a Baskin Robbins/Dunkin donuts and they had neither French Vanilla NOR Peanut Butter N Chocolate. They then served me a too small cone of mint chip. I wanted to scream.

When will the terrorists cease? Now they are attacking our ice cream stores. Where are the Republicans when we need them!

  21. Melodie July 16, 2010 at 12:41 pm

They can’t drop Apple Pie a la Mode. I can only get it in August as it is! Its the best flavor they have.

  22. Gary July 16, 2010 at 3:19 pm

    Potential new flavors:

    -Curry (beef or chicken)
    -Asparagus
    -Crunchy frog

  23. dstephens July 16, 2010 at 3:35 pm

They should drop Anthrax Ripple, too. Chalky.

  24. GPK July 16, 2010 at 4:52 pm

I read this later in the day so I missed seeing “drobbing” but I still got to see “percenet”. I guess that due to cost cutting, the Trib can’t afford spell checking except by comment board posters.

I think I’ve only ever had the French Vanilla out of that list, although Superfudge Truffle does sound intriguing.

  25. objectiv1 July 17, 2010 at 6:09 pm

One of the new ones is saffron.

  26. Tempestuous July 19, 2010 at 6:59 a.m.

@ Gary – Crunchy Frog, excellent!!

@ everyone else poking at Nancy: perhaps she’s not bringing to light the ethnicity of Srinivas Kumar but his TITLE. Seriously, Chief Brand Officer. Why on earth does there need to be a Chief Brand Officer? What was the position called before? Was this a made up position to give it a sense of importance?
