Verizon lifts the curtain on Droid X device

Droid-X-web-two.jpgBy Wailin Wong | Verizon Wireless has lifted the curtain on the next device in its Droid franchise, a phone by Motorola called the Droid X.

The carrier unveiled a teaser site for the new phone, which is expected to get its official launch next week. On the page, an image of the new phone is flanked on either side by two of its predecessors — the first Droid by Motorola, which was launched late last year, and Taiwanese manufacturer HTC’s Droid Incredible, which came out in late April.

Verizon Wireless uses the “Droid” moniker to describe its premiere line of smartphones powered by Google’s Android operating system. The Droid X will be Motorola’s second Droid device.

At an investment conference last month, Jha said Motorola plans to
“participate in the Droid franchise well” and compete well with HTC,
which is also making Android devices.

“This is probably HTC redux for me because when the Nexus One came out,
everyone thought Motorola was dead, and we survived,” Jha said,
referring to the HTC-made Android phone that Google tried selling
directly to consumers through an online store. “I think it’s possible
we’ll survive again. (I’m excited about) the quality of devices we’re
producing — I think they’re competitive, and some of them are probably
better than competitive.”

I’m confused. People have been griping about Apple’s yearly updates to certain products, yet the Droid is undergoing THREE major upgrades in a calendar year? What gives?

@ Urb: You are confused because you don’t understand the difference between the iPhone and Android. While there is only one device (in different versions) known as the iPhone, and it comes from only one manufacturer — Apple — there are several smartphones that utilize the Android operating system and these phones are made by several manufacturers. Motorola makes the Droid and now the Droid X, while HTC makes the Droid Incredible. It is the result of several companies uniting to produce a product that is as good, if not better, than the product generally recognized as the industry leader, mainly thanks to its legions of worshipers who believe that anything not made by Steve Jobs is garbage — kind of like rednecks who boast window decals of comic strip character Calvin of Calvin & Hobbes relieving himself on the logos of whichever pickup truck manufacturer they believe is inferior to their own person choice of Chevy/Ford/Dodge. Rather sad, really.

    JB is correct.
On top of all that, the Droid X’s screen will be 4.3″s, which is substantially bigger than the new iPhone’s screen size.
The new iPhone will look like a toy next to the Droid X. Can’t wait to get my hands on one.

Droid X will be followed by Droid 2 in August and DroidPro in November.

Which should I buy? Droid incredible or Droid X. Which in your opinion is the better of the two? I can’t wait until August or November to get the Droid 2 or Droid Pro.
